More draft notes
Some interesting notes on high schools in the 2008 NFL Draft:
· A total of 245 high schools contributed to the 252 players selected in the seven rounds of the 2008 NFL Draft on April 26-27, USA Football announced today.
· There were seven schools that had two players each taken. Two of those schools produced a first-round choice -- Los Alamitos High in Los Alamitos, California (cornerback ANTOINE CASON by San Diego) and Tustin High in Tustin, California (tackle SAM BAKER by Atlanta).
· One of the high school player duos won back-to-back Louisiana State 5A Championships before moving on to stellar college careers that included BCS national championships. New San Diego Chargers fullback JACOB HESTER (LSU, 2008 national championship) and Minnesota Vikings quarterback JOHN DAVID BOOTY (USC, 2005 national championship) were teammates at Evangel Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana.
· Forty-two states and the District of Columbia had at least one player drafted.
· Nine states were represented in the first 10 picks of the draft. Michigan produced two top-10s (tackle JAKE LONG and defensive end VERNON GHOLSTON). California led the way with 34 players while Florida ranked second with 25.
· Evangel Academy (Shreveport, Louisiana) and Glenville High School (Cleveland, Ohio) were the only two high schools to have multiple players drafted in both 2007 and 2008. In 2007, Evangel tied for the lead with three players selected – CB JONATHAN WADE (St. Louis/3), DE KEYUNTA DAWSON (Indianapolis/7) and DE CHASE PITTMAN (Cleveland/7). Glenville had two players taken in 2007 -- WR TED GINN JR. (Miami/1) and QB TROY SMITH (Baltimore/5).
· One player from Alaska was drafted -- by a cold-weather team. Cornerback ZACKARY BOWMAN of Bartlett High in Anchorage was selected by the Chicago Bears in the fifth round. Bowman can become the 11th player born in Alaska to play the NFL since 1970.
· For the second consecutive year, a drafted player who went to high school in tropical Hawaii will have to brave the cold of Detroit. Linebacker JORDON DIZON (Waimea High) was selected by the Lions in the second round. Defensive end IKAIKA ALAMA-FRANCIS (Kalaheo High) was taken by the Lions in the same round in 2007.

2008 Draft Notes
With two days remaining until the NFL Draft, here’s a look at some Jaguars’ draft notes:
· There are 26 players on the current roster who were drafted by the Jaguars from 2003-07.
· Since 2003, the Jaguars have drafted eight players from the ACC and seven from the Pac-10, the most of any conference.
· Since 1982 there have been four positions that have not been selected with the 26th overall pick in the draft – fullback, tight end, placekicker and punter. The position most often drafted is running back (five times). Defensive end has been selected four times and defensive tackle has been selected three times.
· In the last 13 years, 47 Jaguars draft choices have started at least one contest in their rookie season, including 24 games last year.
· Since Jacksonville entered the league in 1995, the Jaguars have had 15 first-round selections and have drafted eight offensive players and seven defensive players.
· Since juniors were formally allowed to enter the draft in 1990, the Jaguars have taken nine underclassmen.
· There have been 120 players who have been drafted by the Jaguars since 1995. The most have been from Florida with six selections and Tennessee and Southern California rank second with four picks each.
Here’s some information about this year’s draft to digest before Saturday:
· Dallas (Nos. 22 and 28) and Kansas City (No. 5 and 17) are the only two teams with two selections in the first round. Cleveland, Indianapolis and Minnesota do not have first-round picks.
· The following players will be at the draft at Radio City on Saturday: LSU DT Glenn Dorsey, Ohio State DE Vernon Gholston, Virginia DE Chris Long, Michigan T Jake Long, Arkansas RB Darren McFadden and Boston College QB Matt Ryan.
· Ohio State leads the way with 67 draft choices over the last 10 years (since 1998). Florida State, Miami (Fla.) and Tennessee rank tied for second with 64. Florida ranks fifth with 58.
· Miami (Fla.) has had at least one first-round pick in the last 13 NFL Drafts (since 1995), the longest such active streak of a school in the draft. Oklahoma has the second-longest active streak at six consecutive years.

Comparing Garrard with draft class
There were 15 quarterbacks selected in the 2002 NFL Draft including Jacksonville Jaguars signal-caller David Garrard. Garrard was a fourth round pick by the Jaguars, the 108th selection overall. Only six quarterbacks from that draft remain on NFL rosters. Garrard leads the group in career passer rating at 87.7 and is the only player to win a playoff game as a starter. Here’s the list:
Joey Harrington, Detroit, 1st round
David Carr, Houston, 1st round
Patrick Ramsey, Washington, 1st round
Josh McCown, Arizona, 3rd round
David Garrard, Jacksonville, 4th round
Rohan Davey, New England, 4th round
Kurt Kittner, Atlanta, 5th round
Randy Fasani, Carolina, 5th round
Craig Nall, Green Bay, 5th round
Brandon Doman, San Francisco, 5th round
J.T. Sullivan, New Orleans, 6th round
Ronald Curry, Oakland, 7th round
Wes Pate, Baltimore, 7th round
Jeff Kelly, Seattle, 7th round
Seth Burford, San Diego, 7th round
