Mock Draft/Pro Day tracker: Either-or at No. 4

Jaguars.com 2017 Mock Draft/Pro Day tracker v9.0: Analysts continue to see the Jaguars’ selection at No. 4 overall as choice between DL Jonathan Allen and RB Leonard Fournette

JACKSONVILLE – The draft must be getting close.

We’re down to a pretty clear case of either-or.

That’s how analysts clearly see the Jaguars’ scenario with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft, with the vast majority of prognosticators projecting one of two players there.

Jonathan Allen. Leonard Fournette.

Analysts more and more in recent weeks have settled on those two at No. 4. So it is again in the ninth version of the jaguars.com 2017 Mock Draft/Pro Day tracker, with Fournette – a running back from Louisiana State – the selection there for four of 10 prominent analysts publishing mock drafts this past week.

The logic to the Fournette selection remains clear.

“Fournette will take pressure off [Jaguars quarterback] Blake Bortles,” NFL Media analyst Charley Casserly  wrote.

Even analysts normally vehemently opposed to taking running back in the Top 5 believe the Jaguars might go against that unwritten rule to take Fournette.

“I wouldn’t do this, but if the draft plays out this way they will be tempted,” Pete Prisco of CBS Sports wrote. “He would help take the pressure off the quarterback.”

Allen also was the selection for the Jaguars of four prominent mockers this week, with analysts believing Jaguars Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tom Coughlin could take the approach of making a strong area stronger.

“Throw Allen into the mix with a front that already includes Calais Campbell, Malik Jackson, and Dante Fowler Jr., and you’ve got the makings of something special,” Jared Dubin of CBS Sports wrote.

One outlier was Chris Burke of SI.com, who projected Stanford defensive end Solomon Thomas to the Jaguars. Many have projected Thomas to the 49ers at No. 2 overall, and Burke acknowledged that “Thomas may not get past San Francisco.

“But if he does, the odds are very much stacked against him then slipping beyond this spot,” Burke wrote of the Jaguars at No. 4. “Thomas could learn the NFL game behind veteran Calais Campbell, with an eye on an eventual starring role.”
