Jaguars GM Gene Smith on the No. 7 selection: 'I would clearly entertain moving back'

Gene Smith said the Jaguars aren’t necessarily done.

While the initial activity during the early part of the 2012 pro free agency period has subsided, Smith – in his fourth season as the Jaguars’ general manager – said the team still is exploring options.

“There are still chances to get other guys,” Smith said Thursday. “We’ll see how it plays out.”

Smith, speaking shortly after a press conference to discuss the team’s first two 2012 free-agent signings – wide receiver Laurent Robinson and quarterback had Henne – said the team still could address pass rusher and wide receiver in free agency or the April 26-28 NFL Draft.

Smith also said Thursday the Jaguars could be interested in trading their first-round draft selection.

The Jaguars currently hold the No. 7 overall selection in the draft, and Smith said the expected interest around the league in Texas A&M quarterback Ryan Tannehill, could benefit the Jaguars.

“I would certainly entertain moving back,” Smith said. “I know there’s a lot of interest in Tannehill. I think that’s something that clearly could work in our favor, but have a good bit of time before the draft. Things will play out as they always do and we’ll have more clarity than we have today.”

Smith, who said defensive end is not as strong in this year’s draft as last year’s, said although the Jaguars do not currently have additional free-agent visits scheduled there is a possibility more will be scheduled following the so-called first wave of free agency.
