Saturday primer: Bills-Jaguars

Posted Dec 14, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars not concerned with slim playoff scenarios as they prepare to play Buffalo Bills at EverBank Field Sunday.

JACKSONVILLE – Playoff talk hasn’t been much of a “thing” this week.

Not around the Jaguars, anyway, because although players are aware making the postseason remains a possibility, there is a more immediate concern.

And while part of that concern is maintaining the momentum of a three-game winning streak, the focus is more about maintaining the level of play that has led to success in November and December.

“For me, whether we’re struggling a little bit or seeing some things go our way, I want to see us stay true to what got us there,” Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said as the Jaguars (4-9) prepared to play host to the Buffalo Bills (4-9) at EverBank Field Sunday at 1 p.m.

“The playoffs -- I know that’s talk for everybody else, but for us it doesn’t matter if we don’t keep capturing every opportunity we’ve got.”

The Jaguars, by any measure, are playing better than they were early in the season. Much better.

The idea now is to keep doing that.

“We want to keep this going,” Jaguars guard Uche Nwaneri said. “We want to keep playing hard and fast and together as a team. What we’re doing now I really believe will carry into the next season. We’ve found the rhythm that we’ve been looking for all season. Now, we just have to be able to build on it.”

The Jaguars, after losing their first eight games by an average of 22.25 points per game, have won four of five games since a Week Nine bye. Their current three-game winning streak matches the longest active streak in the AFC and they haven’t won four consecutive games since the 2007 season, the last time they qualified for the postseason.

The run has kept them mathematically alive for the playoffs, but those chances remain remote. The Jaguars would have to beat Buffalo and Tennessee at home, and then win at Indianapolis, and the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins each would need to lose their final three games. San Diego and the New York Jets have to lose twice and Pittsburgh and Oakland would have to lose once.

“Whatever they’re talking about – postseason or anything – we have an opportunity to establish ourselves,” Nwaneri said. “The environment, and staff and culture that Gus has built – we really feel confident that we have the talent and the tools to really beat any team we play.”

The Jaguars on Sunday could be without two of their top offensive players, as well as one of their top rookies. Wide receiver Cecil Shorts III is questionable with a groin injury and running back Maurice Jones-Drew (hamstring) and safety Johnathan Cyprien (thigh) are doubtful.

Here’s a look at this week’s coverage of Bills-Jaguars on jaguars.com.
