Saturday primer: Jaguars-Titans

Posted Dec 21, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars (4-10) prepare to play the Tennessee Titans (5-9) at EverBank Field in Jacksonville Sunday at 1 p.m.

JACKSONVILLE – A familiar face will say goodbye Sunday, and Jaguars fans will say it, too.

But while Brad Meester’s final game at the stadium in which he has played home games for nearly a decade and a half is one storyline Sunday, it’s not the only one.

Another is the team itself, and the final two games:

Yes, the Jaguars’ winning streak is over. And yes, the playoff hopes are, too. But the overriding goal of improving, and laying the foundation for the future under Head Coach Gus Bradley and General Manager David Caldwell?

That remains strong and at the fore.

“It hasn’t changed,” Bradley said this week as the Jaguars (4-10) prepared to play the Tennessee Titans (5-9) at EverBank Field Sunday at 1 p.m.

“The way they approach it, the way they’re in meetings, the way they go out on the field, the way we execute you can tell they’re really striving on continuing on finding ways for improvement. That’s really great to go out there at this point in time without that goal or without the playoffs out there you always are trying to watch your team and see how they operate.

“When I’m out there on the field it quickly goes away. They demonstrate the same type of character they had at the beginning.”

The game could mark the final home game for several Jaguars players, including running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who is scheduled to become a free agent after the season. But it certainly is the final game at EverBank for Meester, a 14-year veteran center who announced this week he will retire at the end of the season.

Meester, originally a second-round selection by the Jaguars in the 2000 NFL Draft, is the only player to have played for all five Jaguars permanent/interim head coaches – Tom Coughlin, Jack Del Rio, Mel Tucker, Mike Mularkey and Gus Bradley.

Meester has played in a franchise-record 207 games, 36 more than wide receiver Jimmy Smith. His 207 starts are 57 more than Smith’s 150. Meester also has the two longest consecutive starts streaks in franchise history – 92 from 2000-2005 and his current streak of 88.

Jones-Drew is among three Jaguars players listed as questionable for Sunday, with the others being defensive tackle Roy Miller and linebacker Geno Hayes. All three could be game-time decisions.
