Inside the Jaguars: Physical preparation key

Posted Dec 2, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars HC Gus Bradley says being ready physically critical with just three days to prepare for Thursday’s game against Houston Texans.

JACKSONVILLE – A goal this week is to maintain momentum.

But because that must be done on a short week, Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said a primary focus around EverBank Field this week will be ensuring players are as fresh as possible.

Bradley said that will mean no padded practices as the team prepares to play the Houston Texans at EverBank Field Thursday at 8:25 p.m.

“The biggest thing we’ve got to do for our team right now is get them physically ready for Thursday,” Bradley said Monday, a day after the Jaguars (3-9) came from behind for a 32-28 victory over the Cleveland Browns (4-8) at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland, Ohio.

Bradley said Monday evening’s practice will focus on giving the offense and defense Texans-based looks, with more team-oriented work on Tuesday.

“It’s a little different format than we’ve had in previous weeks, but all with the idea of getting us ready to go physically,” Bradley said.

Bradley on Monday reiterated what he said after the victory Sunday – that while the Jaguars perhaps didn’t play as well as possible Sunday, they showed perhaps as much poise as a team as they had all season.

“I felt a sense of them owning that a little more as far as that philosophy,” Bradley said, adding that after the Browns went ahead late on a 95-yard touchdown reception by Josh Morgan the Jaguars “didn’t flinch.”

“Our guys really looked at it as an opportunity,” Bradley said.

The Jaguars, winners of three of their last four games, are the only NFL team this season to not win a game at home this season. They are 0-4 at EverBank Field and also lost their designated home game to the San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium in London.

The Jaguars will play host to Buffalo and Tennessee in the weeks following the Texans game.

“We don’t look ahead much, but I said (to the team), ‘We have a great opportunity with three games in a row,’’’ Bradley said. “What we need to see is every opportunity we get better. Get better this week, then carry that over … but I did what somewhat of an emphasis on home games, because that is important.

“It doesn’t make it any more important than an away game, but it is special to play at home.’’

Also around the Jaguars:

*Defensive tackle Jeremy Mincey will have a chance to be active this week, Bradley said Monday. Mincey did not travel with the team to Houston and was on the sideline for the Cleveland game after oversleeping and missing a meeting before the Houston game. “I’d like to see him practice this week, but I think he’s going to have an opportunity this week,” Bradley said. “I’d like to see him have a good week and try to get him up.’’ Bradley added, “Someone asked me if he was in my dog house. He wasn’t in my dog house. I was just really trying to help him get better. I wanted to help him see what it takes to be a strong member of our team. To be a strong member of our team, you have to make good decisions.’’…

*Bradley said a significant area of improvement since the Week Nine bye has been in the running game – both offensively and defensively. The Jaguars have held all four opponents – Tennessee, Arizona, Houston and Cleveland – under 100 yards rushing, and they have rushed for more than 100 yards as a team each of the last two games after not doing so in the first 10 games. “We’ve been successful at doing some of those things,” Bradley said, adding that the Jaguars also have improved in the red zone offensively….

*Bradley lauded wide receiver Ace Sanders, quarterback Chad Henne, defensive end Jason Babin, center Brad Meester, middle linebacker Paul Posluszny, fullback Will Ta'ufo’ou, defensive tackle Sen’Derrick Marks and running back Maurice Jones-Drew for their play against Cleveland…

*Safety Josh Evans likely will be very questionable this week as the Jaguars prepare to play the Texans. Evans sustained a shoulder injury against Cleveland Sunday. Winston Guy has shared repetitions with Evans in recent weeks and will start Thursday if Evans can’t play, Bradley said….

*Bradley said aside from Evans the Jaguars were relatively healthy coming out of the Browns game. “We’ve got some guys with some bumps and bruises, but for the most part we’re in pretty good shape,” Bradley said.…

*Because of the Thursday game, the Jaguars issued a Monday injury report, listing three players as not practicing Monday: wide receiver Stephen Burton (concussion), Evans and running back Justin Forsett (foot). Burton has missed the last three games; Forsett is expected to be out six weeks and could be placed on injured reserve this week….

*The following Jaguars players were listed as limited Monday: wide receiver Mike Brown (shoulder), defensive end Andre Branch (knee), linebacker Geno Hayes (knee), defensive tackle Roy Miller (shoulder), linebacker Nate Stupar (chest), wide receiver Cecil Shorts III (groin), guard Will Rackley (elbow), cornerback Mike Harris (hip), tight end Marcedes Lewis (knee) and offensive tackle Austin Pasztor (shoulder)….
