Inside the Jaguars: Senior Bowl Tuesday

South team and Jaguars HC Gus Bradley on Day Two: “…you start to see the speed and really their personal traits start to show up.”

MOBILE, Ala. – Everything sped up during Day Two.

Including the winds off Mobile Bay.

On a sunny and windy day at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Day Two of South team practice, South team and Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said that players’ skill sets truly started to show.

“I think the guys are feeling more comfort level with what we’re asking them to do, and with that you start to see the speed and really their personal traits start to show up,” Bradley said following the South team practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The team had another full evening of team meetings and film review before heading into Tuesday’s practice.

“They’ve got a better feel for what we’re asking them to do. You can imagine these guys are coming from all different offenses and defenses, and we’re installing really quickly. It was kind of introduction to it yesterday.

“Today I think they had a little bit more comfort level, and with that you’re starting to see their spirit show.”

Bradley said that the extra time the Jaguars coaches have with the players is a valuable way to study personalities.

“You get a chance to work with them on the field, and then you go back and you watch them on film and you start talking to them more outside meeting rooms, inside meeting rooms and you start to build that.

“There are perceptions and then there are realities, and we’re starting to become more realistic as to what these guys are all about.”

Bradley on QB Carr

Bradley said South team quarterback Derek Carr of Fresno State has impressed the Jaguars’ offensive coaches.

“I know just talking to our quarterback coach (Frank Scelfo) and Jedd Fisch our (offensive) coordinator, they’re really pleased, they’re really excited about what he has to offer in the meeting rooms, how he comes out here.”

Bradley said the challenge for a quarterback in an all-star environment is taking a leadership role of a team that is unfamiliar with each other.

“It’s tough – you don’t know anybody and we’re trying to form a team in a short period of time, and the whole reality is that we want to get to a point that we are a team so he can lead this team.

“That’s what will be fun to watch as the week goes on.”

Bradley on LB Attaochu

A perk of coaching one of the Senior Bowl teams is the ability to work players in certain areas that could be suited toward a specific scheme.

Gus Bradley said that was the case for Georgia Tech and South team LB Jeremiah Attaochu, who has worked in 3-4 and 4-3 schemes in the past.

“That’s the advantage of being here today and this whole week, is that we have an opportunity to work him at both spots,” Bradley said. “We can be selfish in that and take a look at it. Obviously everybody is going to see the tape, but I think we can get a feel for him in meetings and how fast he can pick up playing those multiple positions.

Bradley said it is still a little early in the week to make any determinations.

“We’re still in the evaluation phase with him.”

Tuesday quotables:

- Former Jaguars linebackers coach Mark Duffner in his Miami Dolphins introductory conference call Tuesday evening: “(It was) just a privilege to work with those players, the Mike Petersons, the Daryl Smiths, the Paul Poslusznys, all these guys, and then the people in the organization, from Mr. Weaver and Mr. Khan, the owners, to the coaching staffs, Coach Del Rio, Coach Mularkey and certainly Coach Bradley, what a phenomenal experience for me to have an opportunity to work with these people. Heck, I didn’t think I’d ever leave there really. Just love the fans there and just a great, great experience to me.”

- Duffner on Posluszny’s Pro Bowl selection: “This young man is a consummate pro and has been an extremely productive player for the Jaguars. I’m just so pleased that he got some of the attention he deserves. I couldn’t be happier, maybe Paul is a little bit happier, but that’s all.”

- Former Jaguars linebacker Mike Peterson, recently retired from the NFL, networking during Senior Bowl week: “I’m looking for work. After 14 years of being in this profession, you find yourself when it’s time to leave you kind of want to stay around. I’m looking to get back in, and the love for the game is still there.”

- Fresno State QB Derek Carr: “I’m trying to be the best me I can be, that’s what Coach (Gus) Bradley preaches, don’t try to be the best, just try to be the best you.”

Around the Senior Bowl:

- The North team practiced at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in the morning session, while the South team worked out following lunch on Tuesday.

- Formal player interviews and meetings will continue Tuesday night, with the final interview sessions slated for Wednesday evening.

- Both the North and South teams will practice at Ladd-Peebles Stadium on Wednesday, with the North scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CT, and the South scheduled for 1:30 p.m. CT.
