2014 NFL Draft: Jaguars select Smith in Round 5

Posted May 10, 2014

Jaguars select Arkansas DE Chris Smith in fifth round of 2014 NFL Draft.

JACKSONVILLE – Defense, defense, defense.

After using the first two selections of Day 3 on defense, the Jaguars went that direction yet again midway through Saturday afternoon, using a fifth-round selection – the No. 159 selection overall – on University of Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith.

Smith (6-feet-1, 266 pounds) became the fourth consecutive draft selection to have played in the Senior Bowl, where Head Coach Gus Bradley and the Jaguars’ coaching staff coached in late January.

The Jaguars earlier on Saturday used their fourth-round selection – the No. 114 selection overall – on Oklahoma cornerback Aaron Colvin. They used their first fifth-round selection – the No. 144 selection overall – on Florida State linebacker Telvin Smith.

The Jaguars on Thursday used the No. 3 overall selection to select Central Florida quarterback Blake Bortles, then used three selections on offensive players Friday night.

The Jaguars selected Southern California wide receiver Marqise Lee with the seventh selection of the second round – the No. 39 overall – then traded up into the second round to select Penn State wide receiver Allen Robinson. The Jaguars traded Selections No. 70 and No. 150 – third and fifth-round selections, respectively – in this year’s draft to the San Francisco 49ers for the 61st selection that they used to select Robinson.

The Jaguars then traded up again late Friday night, selecting Miami offensive guard Brandon Linder. The Jaguars traded fourth- and sixth-round selections in this year’s draft to the Patriots. Those were the 105th and 179th selections overall.

The Jaguars have selections remaining Saturday in the sixth round (No. 205) and seventh round (No. 222). The first fifth-round selection was the Jaguars’ original selection and the second came in the Monroe trade.

The sixth-round selection came in trade this offseason for quarterback Blaine Gabbert and the seventh-round selection was their original selection.
