2014 offseason: Scott released; 27 workout players to practice

Posted May 15, 2014

Jaguars release QB Matt Scott, invite 27 players to participate in two-day rookie camp on “workout” basis.

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars reduced their quarterback number by one Thursday.

They did so on the same day they announced that 27 players – including three with NFL experience – have been invited to attend this weekend’s two-day rookie camp at the Florida Blue practice fields adjacent to EverBank Field.

Matt Scott, a quarterback from the University of Arizona who signed with the Jaguars as a collegiate free agent following last year’s draft, was released by the team Thursday afternoon. He spent the 2013 season on the Jaguars’ practice squad.

Scott’s release leaves the team with four quarterbacks:  Starter and seven-year veteran Chad Henne, rookie and No. 3 overall selection in the 2014 NFL Draft Blake Bortles, four-year veteran Ricky Stanzi and rookie collegiate free agent Stephen Morris.

The Jaguars on Thursday also announced the following players will practice on Friday and Saturday on a workout basis:

Cincinnati defensive end Marques Aiken, Alabama State linebacker Leland Baker, Connecticut offensive tackle Jimmy Bennett, Ohio running back Beau Blankenship, Youngstown State offensive tackle Kyle Bryant, Alabama guard/center Antoine Caldwell, Coastal Carolina guard/offensive tackle Jamey Cheatwood, Arkansas wide receiver Greg Childs, Eastern Carolina guard Jordan Davis, South Florida fullback Ryan Eppes, Northern Illinois cornerback Sean Evans, West Virginia linebacker Dozie Ezemma, Nevada-Las Vegas defensive end Mark Garrick, Nebraska defensive back Andrew Green, Winston-Salem State strong safety Jerome Junior, Central Florida strong safety Sean Maag, Troy defensive back Chris Pickett, Missouri cornerback Randy Ponder, Akron defensive end Albert Presley, UCLA defensive tackle Brian Price, Rice guard/center Nate Richards, Florida Atlantic defensive tackle Kayvon Sherill, Clemson linebacker Spencer Shuey, Valdosta State cornerback Dominique Wheeler, Syracuse strong safety Jeremi Wilkes, Connecticut defensive end Tim Willman, Nevada wide receiver Brandon Wimberly.

Caldwell (6-feet-3, 315 pounds), originally a third-round selection by the Houston Texans in the 2009 NFL Draft, played in 39 games with 19 starts for the Texans from 2009-12. He spent part of the 2013 preseason with Buffalo Bills before being released on August 30.

Childs (6-3, 217), originally a fourth-round selection by the Minnesota Vikings in the 2012 NFL Draft, has not played in the NFL because of injury. The Vikings released him in March.

Price (6-1, 303), originally a second-round selection by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2010 NFL Draft, Spent two seasons with Tampa Bay and was traded to Chicago in July of 2012. He also spent part of the 2013 season with Dallas before being released. He most recently played for the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League.

The rookie minicamps will be held from 1:10-3:15 on Friday and Saturday. They are free and open to the public. To register for entrance, visit jaguars.com/register.
