Gabbert out at least a week

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert to miss at least a week with laceration on throwing hand.

JACKSONVILLE – Blaine Gabbert won’t play in Oakland Sunday.

Gabbert, the Jaguars’ starting quarterback in the regular-season opener, will miss at least one week with a laceration sustained to his throwing hand late in a one-sided loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The laceration required 15 stitches.

Chad Henne will start at quarterback for the Jaguars Sunday against the Raiders.

"We have a lot of faith in Chad,” Bradley said Monday during his weekly next-day press conference at Everbank Field. “Hopefully, we won't miss a beat."

Gabbert, a third-year veteran who started his 25th career game Sunday, was a game-time decision on Sunday after being questionable with a thumb injury on his right hand. He completed 16 of 35 passes for 121 yards and two interceptions with no touchdowns Sunday in a game in which the offense produced 178 total yards.

The Jaguars lost to the Chiefs, 28-2.

Gabbert sustained the injury on the final series when he caught his hand in a facemask. Gabbert is missing some skin in the area where he sustained the laceration, Bradley said, and the missing skin has raised concern about infection in the area.

Bradley said he did not initially know the severity of the injury Sunday night.

“I did not know it was to that degree,” Bradley said. “It was pretty severe.”

Henne, who started the final six games of last season when Gabbert went on injured reserve, completed three of six passes for 36 yards on the game’s final drive Sunday.

Henne and Gabbert competed throughout preseason and training camp for the starting position, with the each taking nearly the same amount of repetitions with the first team in practice.

Bradley said he didn’t yet know if the team will sign an additional quarterback. Third-year veteran Ricky Stanzi, signed off waivers shortly before the preseason finale, is the third quarterback on the depth chart, and rookie free agent Matt Scott is on the practice squad.

“(General Manager) Dave (Caldwell) and I will discuss those things, but right now, Ricky will be the guy getting multiple (additional) reps,” Bradley said.
