Jaguars Foundation Partners with Hispanic Chamber to Award College Scholarships

Posted Oct 20, 2017

Last month, the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FCHCC) hosted the Hispanic Heritage Gala and Achieving The Dream Scholarship Awards to recognize 10 outstanding scholarship recipients.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Last month, the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (FCHCC) hosted the Hispanic Heritage Gala and Achieving The Dream Scholarship Awards to recognize 10 outstanding scholarship recipients who are blazing the trail for future generations as they realize their dreams of a college education. The Jaguars Foundation participated as a silver sponsor and contributed $5,000 towards FCHCC’s scholarship program.

At the dinner, the Jaguars also publicly recognized Maira Martelo as the recipient of the 2017 NFL Hispanic Heritage Leadership Award for her continued commitment to the Hispanic community. Maira serves on the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Committee and contributed to the selection of the 2017 scholarship award winners.

“Maira Martelo represents the best in our country,” said Peter Racine, Jaguars senior vice president of community impact. “Her passion for education is shared by Jaguars Owner Shad Khan, also an immigrant to the United States who came to this county to pursue his studies. We are also pleased to join the First Coast Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in providing scholarships to such deserving students.”

The Jaguars Foundation continues to support and invest in the Hispanic community in North Florida. Later this year, the Jaguars Foundation will be partnering with the FCHCC to award the Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Florida a $5,000 grant to help bring more Hispanic youth to their club and offset registration costs for their NFL FLAG league.

Fans can visit www.NFL.com/HispanicHeritage for a look at the personal stories of Hispanic players, past and present who have left a lasting legacy on the NFL.  It is the league’s goal to enhance the celebration with local community outreach in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
