Jaguars acquire undisclosed selection for Smith

Jacksonville Jaguars acquired undisclosed draft selection for DT D’Anthony Smith.

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars got a draft selection they didn’t expect Saturday.

D’Anthony Smith, a defensive tackle listed by the Jaguars as being released when announcing a series of roster moves Friday, has been traded by the team for an undisclosed draft selection to the Seattle Seahawks, the teams announced Saturday afternoon.

Although the Jaguars announced they had released 21 players Friday to trim the roster to the league-mandated 53, the official list of released players was not turned into the league until Saturday at 6 p.m. Teams had to be down to 53 players by Saturday at 6 p.m.

The Seahawks, who are near the bottom of the league’s waiver claim list – a list based on making the postseason last season – opted to trade for Smith Saturday rather than to risk another team claiming him.

Smith (6-feet-2, 300 pounds), a third-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, spent his first two seasons on injured reserve. He played well throughout the preseason, but the Jaguars opted to retain Sen’Derrick Marks (6-2, 295), Roy Miller, Kyle Love and Brandon Deaderick at the tackle position. None of the four players retained were with the Jaguars last season.
