Jaguars activate linebacker Daryl Smith to 53-man roster: place safety Dwight Lowery on injured reserve

The Jacksonville Jaguars today activated linebacker Daryl Smith to the 53-man roster from the injured reserve/designated to return list and placed safety Dwight Lowery on injured reserve with a foot injury.

Smith did not play in the preseason or the first six regular season games this season before he was placed on injured reserve on October 25 with a groin injury.

Each team can activate one player per season from the injured reserve list if the player sustained a major injury which is defined as missing at least six weeks.  The player can return to practice after six weeks and can be activated after eight weeks.

Smith has made 122 starts for the Jaguars since being selected in the second round of the 2004 draft.   He owns the franchise record with 1,084 tackles including 100-plus tackles in a team record seven straight seasons. He is the only player in franchise history with a streak of five straight seasons with 100-plus tackles including a career-high 170 in 2006.  Prior to the 2012 season, he had missed only three games due to injuries and started all 16 games in five seasons.

In addition to his tackles, Smith has totaled 21.5 sacks, 59 tackles for loss, nine forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries and six interceptions in eight seasons.  He set a single-season franchise record in 2011 with 15 tackles for loss.
