Jaguars agree to terms with Toby Gerhart

Jaguars agree to terms with former Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart.

JACKSONVILLE – An active first day of free agency stayed that way into the night.

Toby Gerhart, a running back who spent his first four NFL seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, agreed to terms on Tuesday night to sign as an unrestricted free agent with the Jaguars.

Earlier in the day it was announced that former Denver Broncos guard Zane Beadles is expected to sign with the Jaguars, and the Jaguars also traded quarterback Blaine Gabbert to the San Francisco 49ers earlier in the day.

The NFL’s free-agency period began at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Gerhart, a second-round selection from Stanford in the 2010 NFL Draft, spent the last four seasons mostly backing up All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson. He rushed for 283 yards and two touchdowns on 36 carries this past season.

In his career, Gerhart has rushed for 1,305 yards and five touchdowns on 276 career carries, a 4.7-yard per carry average. His most extensive playing time came in 2011, when he started five games in place of an injured Peterson.

He rushed for 531 yards and a touchdown on 109 carries that season.

Gerhart won the Doak Walker Award given annually to the nation’s top running back in 2009, when he also finished as the runner-up in the Heisman Trophy balloting to Mark Ingram of Alabama.

The Jaguars currently have three running backs on the roster in addition to Gerhart: Delone Carter, Jordan Todman and Shaun Chapas. Maurice Jones-Drew became an unrestricted free agent at 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
