The Jacksonville Jaguars today were awarded ninth-year defensive end Jason Babin off waivers from the Philadelphia Eagles.  Defensive tackle D’Anthony Smith was placed on injured reserve with a concussion/neck.

Babin, 6-3, 267, has played in 109 games with 69 starts over his nine NFL seasons and has spent time with Houston (2004-06), Seattle (2007-08), Kansas City (2008), Tennessee (2010) and Philadelphia (2009, 2011-12).  He was a first-round draft pick of the Texans in 2004, the 27th pick overall.  His career totals include 53.5 sacks, nine forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.  Babin ranks third in the NFL since 2010 with 36.0 sacks, trailing only Dallas’ DeMarcus Ware (45.0) and Minnesota’s Jared Allen (40.0).

Babin started the first 11 games of the 2012 season for the Eagles and totaled 32 tackles (24 solo), 5.5 sacks, 30 quarterback pressures and two forced fumbles.  His 5.5 sacks led the Eagles and he had a sack in three of his last four games played.  He registered 1.5 sacks of Kevin Kolb on Sept. 23 at Arizona, his 13th career multi-sack outing.  Babin forced a fumble of Brandon Weeden in the season-opener at Cleveland in addition to recording one sack and six quarterback pressures.

In 2011, Babin earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection as he tallied a career-high 18 sacks which ranked third in the NFL.  In his only season with Tennessee in 2010, he totaled 12.5 sacks to earn his first Pro Bowl selection.

A native of Paw Paw, Michigan, Babin played at Western Michigan where he finished his career with 38 sacks, 299 tackles, eight forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
