The Jacksonville Jaguars today were awarded rookie running back Jonathan Grimesoff waivers from Houston. The Jaguars’ roster stands at 53 players. Grimes, 5-10, 209, was originally signed as a rookie free agent by Houston and also spent time with the New York Jets. He played in nine games in 2012, six with the Texans and three with the Jets.
Grimes left William & Mary as the school’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,541), all-purpose yards (7,955), kickoff return yards (2,289) and rushing attempts (936). He finished with 11 all-conference honors and was a first-team All-America selection as a senior. He led the nation in his final season with 228.2 all-purpose yards per game and ranked sixth in the nation with 130.1 rushing yards per game. He closed out his collegiate career with three consecutive 200-plus rushing games.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Grimes attended Paul VI Catholic High School where he was honored as the All-South Jersey Running Back of the Year in 2007. He rushed for a single-season school record 1,925 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior. He also lettered in basketball and track.
Grimes will wear jersey number 43.
