Jacksonville Jaguars claim DE Brandon Deaderick off waivers from New England Patriots

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars have added depth to the defensive line.

Brandon Deaderick, a fourth-year defensive end from the University of Alabama, has been claimed by the Jaguars off waivers from the New England Patriots Tuesday, the team announced Tuesday afternoon.

The Jaguars released wide receiver Cole McKenzie.

Deaderick (6-feet-4, 305 pounds), a seventh-round selection in the 2010 NFL Draft, spent the past three seasons with New England, starting 14 of 34 games.

Deaderick, 25, registered one sack last season, and had two sacks in 2011 in addition to a sack early in the Patriots’ loss to the New York Giants in the Super Bowl following the 2011 season. He also started three postseason games that season.

He has 51 career tackles, with five sacks and two forced fumbles.

Deaderick started at both tackle and end for New England, with all five starts this past season coming at defensive tackle.

Deaderick joins a Jaguars defense in transition under first-year Head Coach Gus Bradley. The team currently has eight ends on the 90-man offseason roster, with Deaderick joining veterans Jason Babin, Andre Branch, Austen Lane, first-year veteran Ryan Davis and rookies Paul Hazel, Pannel Egboh, J.D. Griggs.

Babin is expected to start the season in the team’s Leo role, a pass-rushing role that is a hybrid defensive end and linebacker. Branch also is expected to work his way into that role.

A native of Elizabethtown, Kentucky, Deaderick started 31 of 44 games at Alabama with 82 tackles and eight sacks.
