JACKSONVILLE – Allen Hurns is going to be with the Jaguars a while.
That was never very uncertain, but it became really certain Thursday when the third-year veteran wide receiver signed a long-term contract extension with the Jaguars.
Hurns, who originally signed with the Jaguars as undrafted free agent shortly after the 2014 NFL Draft, signed the extension late Thursday afternoon. The extension was for four years.
"We're excited for his family and this is very well deserved," Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell said in a statement.
Hurns, who played collegiately at the University of Miami, could renegotiate this offseason because he had signed as an undrafted free agent. Players drafted in 2014 may not renegotiate extensions until after the 2016 season.
Hurns, a starter in 23 of 31 games played the past two seasons, started eight games as a rookie in 2014 and 15 of 16 games last season. He has 115 receptions for 1,708 yards and 16 touchdowns in two seasons.
Hurns caught 64 passes for 1,031 yards and 10 touchdowns last season after catching 51 passes for 677 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie. His career receiving yards and career touchdowns are both the most by an undrafted player in his first two NFL seasons since the 1970 Merger.
Hurns is the first player drafted or signed as a rookie in the Head Coach Gus Bradley/General Manager David Caldwell era to renegotiate and re-sign a long-term extension.
