Jaguars release Spitz, Massaquoi

Posted Aug 19, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars release veteran OG/C Jason Spitz, WR Mohamed Massaquoi.

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars released two veterans Tuesday.

Guard/center Jason Spitz and wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, a pair of veteran reserves, were released by the Jaguars on Monday, two days after the team’s second preseason game.

Spitz, an eight-year veteran from Louisville, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent shortly before the 2011 season. He played 10 games that season as a reserve, and then spent last season on injured reserve.

He played his first six seasons with Green Bay, and played high school football locally at the Bolles School.

Massaquoi, a fifth-year veteran from the University of Georgia, signed with the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent this past offseason. With second-year veteran Justin Blackmon suspended for the first four games, Massaquoi originally was thought to have a chance to compete for the early-season starting position opposite Cecil Shorts III, but he slipped on the depth chart during training camp.

He caught two passes for 15 yards in the first two preseason games.

The release of Massaquoi left the Jaguars with 10 wide receivers on the roster: Shorts, Blackmon, rookie Ace Sanders, first-year veteran Mike Brown, fourth-year veterans Jordan Shipley and Charly Martin, first-year veterans Toney Clemons and Jeremy Ebert and rookies Tobais Palmer, Jamal Miles. Rookie Denard Robinson also has worked at receiver in training camp.

Of that group, Shorts, Blackmon, Sanders, Brown, Shipley and Ebert have worked most extensively with the front-line units at receiver.

The release of Spitz leaves the Jaguars with the following guards on the roster: starters Uche Nwaneri and Will Rackley, as well as guard/center Drew Nowak and guard Austin Pasztor.
