Jaguars sign safety Chris Harris, waive cornerback Kevin Rutland

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed eighth-year safety Chris Harris to a contract and waived cornerback Kevin Rutland, the club announced today.

Harris, 6-0, 211, has spent time with Chicago, Carolina and Detroit where he played in 96 games with 88 starts.  His career totals include 421 tackles, 16 interceptions, 37 passes defensed, 13 forced fumbles and nine fumble recoveries.   He has started at least seven games in his first seven seasons in the NFL.  He played in 11 games in 2011, seven for Chicago and four for Detroit, and started eight games.  He began the season with the Bears before he was released and claimed off waivers by the Lions on October 28.   He was not with a team in 2012.

A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Harris was a sixth-round draft pick of Chicago in 2005 where he spent his first two seasons.  He was traded to Carolina during the 2007 training camp and started 44 games for the Panthers over three seasons.  He returned to the Bears via trade in April of 2010 and started all 16 games while finishing with a career-high five interceptions.

Harris will wear jersey number 43.
