Jacksonville Jaguars agree to terms with rookie wide receiver Ace Sanders

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars continue to close in on signing their rookie class.

Ace Sanders, the Jaguars’ fourth-round selection in the 2013 NFL Draft, on Thursday agreed to terms on his rookie contract, leaving sixth-round safety Josh Evans as the last Jaguars rookie with an unresolved contract situation.

Duration and terms of Sanders’ deal were not disclosed.

Sanders, a wide receiver/punt returner from South Carolina, is the seventh of the Jaguars’ eight selections to agree, with fifth-round selection Denard Robinson having signed earlier this week.

Right tackle Luke Joeckel, the No. 2 overall selection in the draft, signed his contract in late June, with seventh-round cornerbacks Jeremy Harris and Demetrius McCray, third-round cornerback Dwayne Gratz and second-round safety Johnathan Cyprien having previously signed.

Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell said upon the closing of the team’s mid-June minicamp he expected all draft selections to be signed in time for training camp, and he reiterated that upon announcing Robinson’s signing early this week.

Sanders (5-7, 178) is expected to play a key role as a slot receiver, and his role could be particularly significant early in the season with starting outside receiver Justin Blackmon serving a four-game suspension. Sanders had a productive offseason program after missing the early part of organized team activities with an injury, and worked as the starter in the slot in the team’s final minicamp practice.

He caught 99 passes for 1,230 yards and 13 touchdowns at South Carolina and also returned 53 punts for an 11.2-yards-per-return average and three touchdowns.
