Saturday primer: Jaguars-49ers

Posted Oct 26, 2013

Jacksonville Jaguars HC Gus Bradley on game against San Francisco 49ers at Wembley Stadium in London: “I am proud of our team and I think I want it more for them than anything.”

LONDON – To Gus Bradley, it remains about the game.Always.

Not the eight-hour plane ride, a week in a foreign country, thelogistics involved or the sightseeing. And the Jaguars’ head coach said it’s not even about the events with which he has dealt this week.

Bradley, whose father, Roy James Bradley died Sunday, said that’s not why he very much wants to win Sunday. That’s a separate issue, an issue on a different level – and having little do with winning or losing an NFL game.

Bradley wants to win Sunday because he feels his players deserve it.

It is with that lens that Bradley will view Sunday.

“Someone asked me how great would it be to get a victory on Sunday,” Bradley said as the Jaguars (0-7) prepared to play the San Francisco 49ers (5-2) at Wembley Stadium in London Sunday at 1 p.m.

“I think it would be awesome, but more so than anything for our team. I really have grown a great loving for this team and their attitude and their work ethic so they’re the ones who deserve it.”

The Jaguars played the Rams and Broncos tough into the second half in Weeks Five and Six before struggling throughout a 24-6 loss to the San Diego Chargers at EverBank Field Sunday. Bradley said after the game he saw a lack of effort, but said later it was more accurate to say the team lacked spirit.

It was the players’ response to what he said immediately after the game that Bradley said made him feel more strongly about the players than before. Whereas some teams might have had a division over such a comment, Bradley said players understood and took it upon themselves to play more with the energy and spirit that Bradley considers core the Jaguars’ building process.

Bradley, asked about what the game meant to him in the wake of his personal events this week, said that’s not really how he feels this week.

“I think in my heart my Dad will always live, and I try to please him each and every day and I think that’s all we can do,” he said. “I am proud of our team and I think I want it more for them than anything.”
