This is the year to blossom

Annoying fist pumps aside, you gotta admit that what Tiger did over the weekend was unbelievable. The two eagle shots and the chip-in on 17 on Saturday had me cheering as if I was at a Jags game. Your thoughts?
Vic: He’s probably the best golfer ever. The day is rapidly approaching that he will eclipse Jack Nicklaus’ major wins total and that’ll make it official. I think Tiger Woods, however, is worthy of higher praise. He may be the most accomplished professional athlete in history and he may also be the best crunch-time performer ever.
Nick from Toronto, Ontario
I understand what you're saying about Matt Jones, but the same things were being said about Reggie Williams last offseason. Perhaps patience truly is a virtue when dealing with young wide receivers.
Vic: You’re absolutely right. Reggie Williams’ career with the Jaguars turned on one play in the preseason finale against Washington last summer. He was in trouble at the time and then he made that big play and he made the roster and, the next thing you know, he’s the Jaguars’ touchdown-maker. I think Jones is facing a similar situation. Just as last year was Williams’ time to blossom, I think this year has to be Jones’ and I think it has to begin in training camp.
Dennis from Indianapolis, IN
When do you go on vacation and turn the dead zone into the dead and boring zone? For "Ask Vic" fans, it will get worse before it gets better.
Vic: Following tomorrow’s column, there will be no “Ask Vic” until next Tuesday.
Rob from Jacksonville
What do you think Richard Angulo could bring to the table for the Jags?
Vic: A guy who blocks a lot and catches a little.
Dale from Hampton, VA
I'm surprised the Jaguars let Smolko go, but I guess you can only have so many tight ends, huh?
Vic: Isaac Smolko was getting a shot as an H-back. As a tight end, he just wasn’t big enough and powerful enough in his blocking to compete with the other guys. The way Greg Jones, Montell Owens and Anthony Cotrone caught the football in OTAs, it became obvious that Smolko wasn’t going to make the team.
Bray'de from Jacksonville
Is there a way for the Jaguars to post your in-game blogs on the ribbon panels or on the scoreboards on top of the concrete walls in the four corners of the stadium? I really don't want to bring a laptop computer to every home game, but I want to read what you're writing.
Vic: I don’t see that happening, for a variety of reasons, one of which is that Wayne Weaver probably wouldn’t want to see on his ribbon panels the words, “The Jaguars are playing lousy right now.”
Andrew from St. Augustine, FL
What happens now with Isaac Smolko?
Vic: He goes on to his life’s work.
Kenney from Jacksonville
I take it you're not much of a Tiger Woods fan.
Vic: I’m not a fan of the fist pump. Golf has always been a gentleman’s game. May we please have at least one sport in which men compete graciously? As for his accomplishments, I am in awe. I love his ability to get it done at crunch time. That’s how I judge greatness and, in my opinion, he’s the greatest. I just wish that as he was learning how to be mentally tough, he would’ve also learned restraint.
Jon from Jacksonville Beach, FL
As a chef, I can tell you that the FDA has identified where the contaminated tomatoes originated from, has pulled them from circulation and you should feel safe eating any that are currently on the shelves at the grocery store and being served at your favorite restaurant.
Vic: Thank you for that assurance but, if you don’t mind, I’m gonna stick with the B&Ls just a little longer.
Brian from Round Rock, TX
Your comment on Tiger is right on the money. On one bad tee shot, I witnessed him squat to the ground as if his leg could no longer bear the weight of his body, his face contorted in what looked like the pain of a mortal wound. I almost bought it. I thought he would have to withdraw from the tournament. Of course, 30 seconds later he was strolling along with no ill effects. I really admire Tiger's ability, but the show he put on made me a little sick to my stomach.
Vic: As Chuck Noll used to say, “When you win, everything you say and do is right.”
Alex from Los Angeles, CA
The Texans signed Roosevelt Colvin. Will this have a big impact on Houston's defense?
Vic: He’ll be 31 when the season begins and this will be his 10th year in the league, so this would seem to be a short-term signing with this season in mind. Does Colvin have enough left in the tank to give the Texans one more year? That’s the question. He only had four sacks last season. This would seem to be a boom or bust signing. Some people think Colvin still has it, while others think his best days are behind him. I think he’ll make the Texans better but I don’t think this is an acquisition that will put the Texans over the top.
Raj from Jacksonville
How is size and weight of NFL players’ shoulder pads decided?
Vic: It’s up to the player. You can wear them as big or as small as you’d like.
Bill from Panama City, Panama
It was just wonderful to watch Rocco Mediate play in the Open this week. I wonder how good he could have been without all those years of back pain.
Vic: His back problems hurt him, no doubt, but it was a bulging disk in his putter that hurt the most. Rocco has always been a great ball-striker who has struggled at putting. That’s what makes what he did against Tiger so impressive. I think Rocco missed 8-10 short putts in the final two days. The miss at nine yesterday was the killer. You just don’t figure a guy who’s missing short putts to hang with Tiger for 37 holes.
Alan from Burbank, CA
I was at the U.S. Open this weekend with Snoop Dogg. He says hi.
Vic: Yeah, he called. We had a little bet going.
James from Puyallup, WA
Was Monday's coverage of the U.S. Open playoff by NBC the greatest in the history of the sport?
Vic: It may have been some of the greatest TV coverage in the history of all sports.
Gamble from San Francisco, CA
You should call your wife and tell her you love her.
Vic: If I did that, she’d think I was having an affair.
Regan from Grant, FL
Do you have any stories/memories of Alan Page? I am amazed that a Hall of Famer could find the time to get his law degree while playing and later serve his country as a judge. He surely is an amazing person.
Vic: My strongest memory of Alan Page, other than he played in the 1966 Notre Dame-Michigan State game, is of his induction ceremony at the Hall of Fame. I was covering it the year he was inducted and I remember sitting right in front of him on a brutally hot day and being completely caught off guard by his speech. I think he picked a former teacher of his to present him for induction, and then he gave a speech that was all about education and spoke very little of football. I remember how impressed I was that Page was a man whose intelligence was the equal of his physical strength.
