Jaguars get help in Holt

Veteran WR agrees to contract

Print Story

The Jaguars have finally acquired the wide receiver help most consider the team to have desperately needed, as veteran Torry Holt agreed to a contract on Monday evening.

The seven-time Pro Bowl selection had spent his 10-year career with the St. Louis Rams after being drafted with the sixth overall selection of the 1999 draft. He’s played in 158 games with 146 starts and has missed only two games in 10 seasons. Holt ranks 11th in NFL history in receptions (869) and 14th in receiving yards (12,660), along with 74 touchdowns. He ranks first in NFL history with an average of 80.1 yards receiving per game.

Holt, 6-0, 190, has recorded 80-plus receptions in eight of 10 seasons and 90-plus receptions in six seasons. He posted a streak of eight consecutive seasons from 2000-07 with 1,000-plus receiving yards, and finished with a career-high 117 receptions for 1,696 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2003, the seventh-most receptions in a season in NFL history. Holt has recorded a reception in 153 consecutive games, the fourth-longest streak among active players and 10th-longest in NFL history.

In 2008, Holt made 64 receptions for 796 yards and three touchdowns, while reaching 12,000 career receiving yards in his 146th career game. He was the second-fastest player in NFL history to 12,000 receiving yards (Jerry Rice, 142 games), and reached 11,000 career receiving yards faster than any other player, accomplishing the feat in 131 games.

The former North Carolina State standout has played in 10 postseason games including two Super Bowls. He finished with 109 yards on seven receptions in the Rams Super Bowl XXXIV win over Tennessee in the 1999 season and ranks second in Rams postseason history with 47 receptions for 630 yards.

A native of Gibsonville, N.C., Holt attended Eastern Guilford High School and spent one year at Hargrave Military Academy. He created the Holt Foundation in 1999 in memory of his mother, Ojetta Holt-Shoffner, to support the fight against cancer in all forms, with a specific emphasis on children. His brother, Terrence, also played at North Carolina State and currently plays for the New Orleans Saints.
