Hello and welcome to the press box at Candlestick Park. It's a gorgeous day for football in the Bay Area.
JAGUARSINSIDER
12:49 PM
Great read on
Maurice Jones-Drew in the local paper.

12:51 PM
I love it. Very historic feel right on the water. RT @thejimcox: R they still at Candlestick? If so, describe if it's run-down!
Vic Ketchman
12:58 PM
I see that Ryan Robinson is charmed by Candlestick. I am not and never have been. First of all, it was built for baseball only and it was bad at that due to winds that blew in from leftfield and kept Willie Mays from breaking Babe Ruth's home run record before Henry Aaron did. If Mays hadn't played here, he might've pushed the record out of sight. More to follow.
Vic Ketchman
1:02 PM
For football, there are just too many bad seats. The best seats on one side are temporary-type bleachers. Many of the best seats on the other side are too low to see the field or they're obstructed by poles. The field is at sea level and very soft. Candlestick is a compromise between baseball and football. The 49ers need a new stadium and, from what I understand, they are in the process of getting it.
JAGUARSINSIDER
1:53 PM
Former Jaguar Tony Pashos (great human being) is on the field greeting his former teammates and coaches. Well-liked guy by many.
JAGUARSINSIDER
2:23 PM
Brad Meester will tie Fred Taylor today in second place for most games played in team history at 140.
Vic Ketchman
2:26 PM
I'm watching the Colts-Texans game. A Houston win could make for a showdown-type of game next week in Jacksonville.
JAGUARSINSIDER
2:33 PM
Inactives: WR
Nate Hughes, CB
Rashean Mathis, DT Derek Landri, OT Tra Thomas, OT Maurice Williams, OL
Paul McQuistan, DT Greg Peterson.
JAGUARSINSIDER
2:34 PM
CB
Michael Coe is also inactive.
Tyron Brackenridge will start at CB for
Rashean Mathis.
JAGUARSINSIDER
2:35 PM
Players like reading the game programs. RT @Bludger83: What r the magazines laying on players chairs in the locker room?
Vic Ketchman
4:02 PM
Unless everybody comes in here at one time, this game is going to have a huge no-show count.
Vic Ketchman
4:03 PM
Houston's loss is good for the Jags, in more than one way.
Vic Ketchman
4:04 PM
Jacksonville has won the toss and has elected to defer its choice. The 49ers will receive the opening kickoff.
Vic Ketchman
4:06 PM
Josh Scobee kicks it through the end zone.
JAGUARSINSIDER
4:07 PM
DE
Julius Williams is the seventh different rookie to start for the Jaguars this season and second undrafted rookie (
Russell Allen).
Vic Ketchman
4:08 PM
Alex Smith throws to the other tight end for a first down at midfield. The 49ers are going to the spread.
Vic Ketchman
4:09 PM
Yeah, it appears the 49ers have injected some spread offense elements into their offense.
Vic Ketchman
4:10 PM
Beautiful throw by Smith for a first down. He had all day to throw.
Vic Ketchman
4:13 PM
Smith misfires on third down this time. He never set his feet. The field goal team is on for a 47-yard field goal attempt. It's good by Joe Nedney.
Vic Ketchman
4:16 PM
The 49ers kicked away from Brian Witherspoon. The Jags start at their 29-yard line.
Vic Ketchman
4:18 PM
David Garrard opens with a slant to Torry Holt.
Vic Ketchman
4:19 PM
The 49ers smelled the screen coming from the time the ball was snapped. They've got their eye on
Maurice Jones-Drew.
Vic Ketchman
4:20 PM
Garrard throws complete but short of the first down. Garrard had a rusher in his face and he got walloped as he threw.
Vic Ketchman
4:25 PM
The Jaguars held on third down and they should get great field position on this exchange.
Vic Ketchman
4:26 PM
It's not as good as I thought it would be. Andy Lee hit a high, long punt and Witherspoon got nothing out of the return. The Jags start at their 37.
Vic Ketchman
4:28 PM
A pass to
Ernest Wilford gains nine.
Vic Ketchman
4:28 PM
Jones-Drew gets the first down.
Vic Ketchman
4:31 PM
I was wondering how Garrard was getting away with grounding, but after they thought about it, they called it. He was under a big rush and had no receiver.
JAGUARSINSIDER
4:31 PM
First incompletion by Garrard today. Hit on first five passes to four different receivers.
Vic Ketchman
4:32 PM
Three-man rush knocked him down. That's three times he's hit the ground.
Vic Ketchman
4:33 PM
Adam Podlesh nearly had his punt blocked, but he got it off and the 49ers made a fair catch at about their 10. Punt-returners at that end of the field have to look directly into the sun. Remember that. This is a tough sun field.
Vic Ketchman
4:34 PM
If the Jags lose, I was told, the Colts clinch the AFC South title.
Vic Ketchman
4:35 PM
Completion and a facemask by Clint Ingram. That hurts.
Vic Ketchman
4:36 PM
It hurts because it changes field position. I have a feeling this is going to be a game of field position.
JAGUARSINSIDER
4:36 PM
Rookie
Jeremy Navarre is seeing action at defensive end. Just another rookie that is getting valuable playing time.
JAGUARSINSIDER
4:37 PM
On 15 plays, Frank Gore has eight touches for the 49ers.
Vic Ketchman
4:37 PM
The Jags are mixing in some 3-4. This place is quiet. There's nothing intimidating about this crowd.
Vic Ketchman
4:38 PM
The pass is dropped on third down. I'm surprised the 49ers haven't thrown deep. They've got the man coverage they want.
Vic Ketchman
4:38 PM
Long return by Witherspoon and no flags. That punt was a mile high. The Jaguars must've really blocked well on the return.
Vic Ketchman
4:39 PM
The Jags have it at the 49ers' 47.
Vic Ketchman
4:42 PM
Garrard flips it to Jones-Drew as Garrard was going down. Nice gain. That's the end of the first quarter.
Vic Ketchman
4:43 PM
The 49ers have no explosiveness in their offense. It's easy to see that's holding them back. I don't know if they lack the arm to throw deep or the speed to get deep.
JAGUARSINSIDER
4:44 PM
Garrard is 7 of 8 for 63 yards after first quarter. 49ers safety Curtis Taylor has a hip strain and his return is doubtful.
Vic Ketchman
4:47 PM
Michael Lewis makes a great tackle on Jones-Drew. It's field goal time from 40 yards. Scobee is wide left. He kicked a knuckleball.
Vic Ketchman
4:48 PM
I don't know what's up with Scobee. That squib kick last week wasn't a squib kick. He mis-hit it. This kick was mis-hit. The hold was fine. He may have slipped.
Vic Ketchman
4:50 PM
Julius Williams got turned on that end-around.
Vic Ketchman
4:51 PM
Williams is so wide that he's inviting the run to his side but the 49ers aren't interested.
Vic Ketchman
4:52 PM
Smith to Vernon Davis for a first down. That was a display of great hands by Davis. First down at the Jags 36.
Daryl Smith nearly had a sack.
Vic Ketchman
4:53 PM
A hit by
Sean Considine knocks the ball loose from Davis near the goal line. It was a perfect throw.
Vic Ketchman
4:54 PM
The Jaguars are doing a lot of things defensively; a lot of blitzing.
Vic Ketchman
4:54 PM
Smith to Crabtree at the nine. Smith looks super today.
Vic Ketchman
4:55 PM
They've got to do something in the offseason about pushing teammates forward. It's dangerous.
Vic Ketchman
4:56 PM
They tried "The Catch," but it didn't work. Seriously, that's the famous "sprint right option" play.
Vic Ketchman
4:57 PM
Touchdown! A great play-action fake by Smith and then Smith flipped it to Davis for the score. The Jags were overplaying the run on third down.
Vic Ketchman
4:58 PM
These are the new 49ers. These are the spread-offense 49ers, the Urban Meyer-type system out of which Smith was drafted. What took them so long?
Vic Ketchman
4:58 PM
The 49ers have run 26 plays to the Jaguars' 13 plays.
Vic Ketchman
5:03 PM
I am very fortunate to have an extra pair of eyes next to me who understands what's going on. I'm talking about my old buddy Ryan Robinson.
Vic Ketchman
5:04 PM
Linebacker Manny Lawson just made it into NFL bloopers. He jumped a mile high to catch a fluttering pass he could've caught with a net...and then he dropped it. Garrard is getting killed by the rush.
Vic Ketchman
5:05 PM
Jags punt coverage is good. That was a rather low punt and the returner was swarmed at the 49ers 34.
Vic Ketchman
5:05 PM
This is a critical point early in the game. You can't lose touch with these guys because that would take the Jags out of their running game.
Vic Ketchman
5:07 PM
Quentin Groves has replaced Williams. It's a tough game. It doesn't happen just because you want it to.
Vic Ketchman
5:08 PM
I don't understand why they don't throw deep.
Vic Ketchman
5:09 PM
They dink it on third down short of the first down. Rinky dinky dink.
Vic Ketchman
5:10 PM
The Jags need to get the run going.
Vic Ketchman
5:11 PM
Holding on
Brad Meester pushes the ball back to the 14. The offense looks very sluggish.
Vic Ketchman
5:13 PM
Dink pass to
Marcedes Lewis. I'm just not seeing anything special. They need to do something special.
JAGUARSINSIDER
5:13 PM
Maurice Jones-Drew has established career-highs in rushes and rushing yards.
Vic Ketchman
5:14 PM
Push-off by
Mike Sims-Walker on a catch that would've gotten a first down. That's his second penalty to go with no catches in three tries.
Vic Ketchman
5:14 PM
Screen on third and a mile is what you would expect. The 49ers were loaded up in the secondary. Surrender was the smart choice.
Vic Ketchman
5:16 PM
From the 49ers' 41, Smith dinks for three yards. I hate this kind of offense. It's meek, Mike.
Vic Ketchman
5:17 PM
If Peyton Manning is running, Ingram would've been penalized and fined.
Vic Ketchman
5:18 PM
Tyron Brackenridge played it beautifully. He nearly had a pick six. It's third down.
Vic Ketchman
5:19 PM
Just shy of the first down. It's decision time for Mike Singletary but, first, the two-minute warning.
JAGUARSINSIDER
5:20 PM
The Jaguars have trailed at halftime in two of their six wins this season.
Vic Ketchman
5:20 PM
It's fourth and one at the Jags 37. What would I do? I'd punt because I have three times out remaining and I wouldn't want to give the Jags a short field after a half of domination.
Vic Ketchman
5:21 PM
Smith has already thrown 26 passes. The 49ers are going for it. This could be a big mistake.
Vic Ketchman
5:21 PM
It's a full yard, too. Where's the respect for the Jaguars defense?
Vic Ketchman
5:23 PM
What a call, what a play. A play-action fake and a deep pass to Davis. He beat Ingram down the sideline for 30 yards.
Daryl Smith hit Smith hard.
Vic Ketchman
5:24 PM
I'm stunned by that call. If they don't get the first down, and Davis had to look back into the sun and catch the ball over his shoulder, the Jags would've had a chance to cut the deficit to three or seven points before halftime.
Vic Ketchman
5:25 PM
It'll be third and goal from the four.
Vic Ketchman
5:26 PM
Touchdown! Smith to Gore. I'll watch his feet on replay. Wait, please.
Vic Ketchman
5:28 PM
They're going to review it but it appears to be a catch. Brackenridge broke coverage to come up on Smith, who gave the look of wanting to run for the corner.
Vic Ketchman
5:28 PM
Smith is 18 of 29 for 169, two touchdowns and a 101.1 rating. The Jags are making him the 49ers' quarterback of the future.
Vic Ketchman
5:30 PM
It's confirmed, touchdown. I'm really getting tired of replay.
Vic Ketchman
5:31 PM
Singletary is an interesting guy. He's brash and he's trying to get his quarterback to reflect that brashness. I don't like the yelling but he intrigues me.
Vic Ketchman
5:32 PM
The Jags have 46 seconds to get some points on the board or it'll be six shutout quarters on the Pacific rim.
Vic Ketchman
5:33 PM
A pass to Sims-Walker gains a first down near midfield.
Vic Ketchman
5:33 PM
Time out, Jags, at the 49ers' 48 with :17 to play in the half.
Vic Ketchman
5:34 PM
Complete to Sims-Walker at the 30 with 11 seconds to play.
Vic Ketchman
5:34 PM
Go to the end zone and then kick it.
JAGUARSINSIDER
5:35 PM
Torry Holt moved into Top 10 in NFL history for most receiving yards. He now ranks in the Top 10 for both receptions and receiving yards.
Vic Ketchman
5:35 PM
Garrard threw underneath to Holt at the 14. Scobee will have a chip-shot attempt. This drive kind of saves the day for the Jags. The 49ers ice the kicker.
Vic Ketchman
5:36 PM
Scobee is good from 32 yards.
Vic Ketchman
5:37 PM
That's the end of the half. The yardage difference, 203-164, is misleading. A lot of that came in that last drive.
Vic Ketchman
5:38 PM
The 49ers have some players. It's all about the quarterback for them. Is Smith the real thing? Today he has been.
JAGUARSINSIDER
5:41 PM
Garrard is 14 of 18 for 146 yards for a 100.5 rating. Sims-Walker has three receptions for 42 yards (14.0 average).
Vic Ketchman
5:49 PM
I need to warn you of the possibility of an early departure. The press box here is antiquated and requires that I walk through the crowd to get to the field and the locker room. Unless the game is a one-score difference, I will leave early. It's what has to be done to avoid having to walk down while everybody else is walking up.
Vic Ketchman
5:50 PM
The Jags get the ball to start the second half. They need to make a statement on this possession.
Vic Ketchman
5:51 PM
Garrard opens with a long pass to Wilford at the 49ers' 47.
Vic Ketchman
5:52 PM
A sideline shot to
Mike Thomas gets another first down.
Vic Ketchman
5:52 PM
Another sideline shot to Thomas breaks big to the 15. The Jags are running at wide open throttle.
Vic Ketchman
5:54 PM
Sacked, stripped, 49ers recover. Just as quickly as it went well, it went bad. The rush came from the blind side. Lawson stripped the ball. He beat
Eugene Monroe.
Vic Ketchman
5:54 PM
If the 49ers go down the field here, it could be the kill shot. The Jaguars defense must say no.
Vic Ketchman
5:56 PM
Twenty-two yard pass on first down.
Derek Cox missed a tackle and
Reggie Nelson made a very weak attempt along the sideline.
Vic Ketchman
5:57 PM
Some tight end named Delanie Walker is having a big day. I never heard of him.
Vic Ketchman
5:57 PM
The Jags have the run stopped. The problem is the 49ers are throwing the ball a lot.
Vic Ketchman
5:59 PM
Smith's receivers aren't glue-fingered. Michael Crabtree could've caught that pass.
Vic Ketchman
6:00 PM
Smith to Crabtree for a first down. They went at the linebackers. That's the thing that's amazed me all year. Teams are attacking the Jags linebackers with the pass.
Vic Ketchman
6:01 PM
By appearances, the 49ers had an ironclad game plan to throw the ball. It's big departure from convention for them.
Vic Ketchman
6:01 PM
Great coverage by Cox. He broke up a potential touchdown pass.
Vic Ketchman
6:02 PM
My mistake. It was dropped by Crabtree. The ball was right on the money.
Vic Ketchman
6:02 PM
The 49ers will have a chip-shot field goal attempt to stretch the lead back to 17 points. It's good by Nedney.
Vic Ketchman
6:03 PM
It's gonna be a lot of passing by the Jaguars now and the 49ers will have their ears pinned back.
Vic Ketchman
6:05 PM
The wheels are coming off for the Jags. Witherspoon bobbled the kickoff and the Jags will start at their 10.
Vic Ketchman
6:08 PM
Jones-Drew hustles. He went all the way down the field to make a block after a Lewis reception.
Vic Ketchman
6:10 PM
Sack.
Vic Ketchman
6:11 PM
Nice throw over the middle to Holt for a first down. The Jags stay alive. That would've been end of game had they had to kick.
Vic Ketchman
6:13 PM
Garrard's got to throw the ball away instead of scrambling for a few yards and taking a hit. He's too valuable to take punishment.
Vic Ketchman
6:13 PM
Should've been intercepted.
Vic Ketchman
6:14 PM
Pass to
Zach Miller over the middle for a first down. This is a nice, surgical drive but it must produce a touchdown.
Vic Ketchman
6:15 PM
Jones-Drew up the middle to the 13. Now the 49ers look sluggish.
Vic Ketchman
6:15 PM
He didn't get the first down. In fact, he lost a yard. It's third and one.
Vic Ketchman
6:16 PM
He didn't get it. Kick it, Jack. Cut it to two scores.
Vic Ketchman
6:16 PM
That's the end of the third quarter so Jack Del Rio will have time to think about whether to go for the first down or attempt a field goal.
JAGUARSINSIDER
6:16 PM
Zach Miller was the eighth different receiver to catch a pass for the Jaguars today.
Vic Ketchman
6:17 PM
The Jags have to have three scores. Why not get one now? That's my thinking.
Vic Ketchman
6:17 PM
It appears he's going to go for it on fourth and one.
Vic Ketchman
6:18 PM
It's almost two yards.
Vic Ketchman
6:19 PM
Sacked, stripped, game over. At least, that's what I think.
Vic Ketchman
6:21 PM
The 49ers have the ball at their 34. I don't know for whom Garrard was looking because the rush got to him too quickly for me to pick out his receiver.
Vic Ketchman
6:22 PM
The Jaguars have turned the ball over eight times in their last 21 red zone possessions.
Vic Ketchman
6:23 PM
The 49ers curled up in a ball in that possession. They'll punt with about 13:20 to play.
Vic Ketchman
6:24 PM
The Jags have the ball at their 22 with 13:05 to play.
Vic Ketchman
6:29 PM
Fourth and three and they're going for it.
Vic Ketchman
6:30 PM
Pass to Jones-Drew gains a first down. What a hard run after the catch.
Vic Ketchman
6:30 PM
Over the middle to Thomas.
Vic Ketchman
6:31 PM
I wish they had that field goal.
Vic Ketchman
6:31 PM
First down at the 49ers 23 with under 10 minutes to play. They need to score quickly.
Vic Ketchman
6:32 PM
First down at the 12.
Vic Ketchman
6:32 PM
They're running. The ball is at the seven. We're nearing eight minutes to play.
JAGUARSINSIDER
6:33 PM
Rookie
Mike Thomas has a career-high 62 yards on four receptions (15.5 avg.).
Vic Ketchman
6:33 PM
Second and goal at the three. Jones-Drew is at a thousand yards for the season.
Vic Ketchman
6:33 PM
Tipped and nearly intercepted. It's third and goal with 7:43 to play.
JAGUARSINSIDER
6:33 PM
Maurice Jones-Drew became the second player in team history to record an 1,000-yard rushing season.
Vic Ketchman
6:34 PM
Singletary run all the way past the numbers to call time out.
Vic Ketchman
6:35 PM
I have been told I must leave early. I'm sorry.
Vic Ketchman
6:37 PM
Incomplete out of an empty backfield. Now they're kicking.
Vic Ketchman
6:37 PM
Hit the left upright. No good. I'm out of here, folks.
