Hello and welcome to the press box at Candlestick Park. It's a gorgeous day for football in the Bay Area.

I see that Ryan Robinson is charmed by Candlestick. I am not and never have been. First of all, it was built for baseball only and it was bad at that due to winds that blew in from leftfield and kept Willie Mays from breaking Babe Ruth's home run record before Henry Aaron did. If Mays hadn't played here, he might've pushed the record out of sight. More to follow.

For football, there are just too many bad seats. The best seats on one side are temporary-type bleachers. Many of the best seats on the other side are too low to see the field or they're obstructed by poles. The field is at sea level and very soft. Candlestick is a compromise between baseball and football. The 49ers need a new stadium and, from what I understand, they are in the process of getting it.

I'm watching the Colts-Texans game. A Houston win could make for a showdown-type of game next week in Jacksonville.

Unless everybody comes in here at one time, this game is going to have a huge no-show count.

Houston's loss is good for the Jags, in more than one way.

Jacksonville has won the toss and has elected to defer its choice. The 49ers will receive the opening kickoff.

Josh Scobee kicks it through the end zone.

Alex Smith throws to the other tight end for a first down at midfield. The 49ers are going to the spread.

Yeah, it appears the 49ers have injected some spread offense elements into their offense.

Beautiful throw by Smith for a first down. He had all day to throw.

Smith misfires on third down this time. He never set his feet. The field goal team is on for a 47-yard field goal attempt. It's good by Joe Nedney.

The 49ers kicked away from Brian Witherspoon. The Jags start at their 29-yard line.

David Garrard opens with a slant to Torry Holt.

The 49ers smelled the screen coming from the time the ball was snapped. They've got their eye on Maurice Jones-Drew.

Garrard throws complete but short of the first down. Garrard had a rusher in his face and he got walloped as he threw.

The Jaguars held on third down and they should get great field position on this exchange.

It's not as good as I thought it would be. Andy Lee hit a high, long punt and Witherspoon got nothing out of the return. The Jags start at their 37.

A pass to Ernest Wilford gains nine.

Jones-Drew gets the first down.

I was wondering how Garrard was getting away with grounding, but after they thought about it, they called it. He was under a big rush and had no receiver.

Three-man rush knocked him down. That's three times he's hit the ground.

Adam Podlesh nearly had his punt blocked, but he got it off and the 49ers made a fair catch at about their 10. Punt-returners at that end of the field have to look directly into the sun. Remember that. This is a tough sun field.

If the Jags lose, I was told, the Colts clinch the AFC South title.

Completion and a facemask by Clint Ingram. That hurts.

It hurts because it changes field position. I have a feeling this is going to be a game of field position.

The Jags are mixing in some 3-4. This place is quiet. There's nothing intimidating about this crowd.

The pass is dropped on third down. I'm surprised the 49ers haven't thrown deep. They've got the man coverage they want.

Long return by Witherspoon and no flags. That punt was a mile high. The Jaguars must've really blocked well on the return.

The Jags have it at the 49ers' 47.

Garrard flips it to Jones-Drew as Garrard was going down. Nice gain. That's the end of the first quarter.

The 49ers have no explosiveness in their offense. It's easy to see that's holding them back. I don't know if they lack the arm to throw deep or the speed to get deep.

Michael Lewis makes a great tackle on Jones-Drew. It's field goal time from 40 yards. Scobee is wide left. He kicked a knuckleball.

I don't know what's up with Scobee. That squib kick last week wasn't a squib kick. He mis-hit it. This kick was mis-hit. The hold was fine. He may have slipped.

Julius Williams got turned on that end-around.

Williams is so wide that he's inviting the run to his side but the 49ers aren't interested.

Smith to Vernon Davis for a first down. That was a display of great hands by Davis. First down at the Jags 36. Daryl Smith nearly had a sack.

A hit by Sean Considine knocks the ball loose from Davis near the goal line. It was a perfect throw.

The Jaguars are doing a lot of things defensively; a lot of blitzing.

Smith to Crabtree at the nine. Smith looks super today.

They've got to do something in the offseason about pushing teammates forward. It's dangerous.

They tried "The Catch," but it didn't work. Seriously, that's the famous "sprint right option" play.

Touchdown! A great play-action fake by Smith and then Smith flipped it to Davis for the score. The Jags were overplaying the run on third down.

These are the new 49ers. These are the spread-offense 49ers, the Urban Meyer-type system out of which Smith was drafted. What took them so long?

The 49ers have run 26 plays to the Jaguars' 13 plays.

I am very fortunate to have an extra pair of eyes next to me who understands what's going on. I'm talking about my old buddy Ryan Robinson.

Linebacker Manny Lawson just made it into NFL bloopers. He jumped a mile high to catch a fluttering pass he could've caught with a net...and then he dropped it. Garrard is getting killed by the rush.

Jags punt coverage is good. That was a rather low punt and the returner was swarmed at the 49ers 34.

This is a critical point early in the game. You can't lose touch with these guys because that would take the Jags out of their running game.

Quentin Groves has replaced Williams. It's a tough game. It doesn't happen just because you want it to.

I don't understand why they don't throw deep.

They dink it on third down short of the first down. Rinky dinky dink.

The Jags need to get the run going.

Holding on Brad Meester pushes the ball back to the 14. The offense looks very sluggish.

Dink pass to Marcedes Lewis. I'm just not seeing anything special. They need to do something special.

Push-off by Mike Sims-Walker on a catch that would've gotten a first down. That's his second penalty to go with no catches in three tries.

Screen on third and a mile is what you would expect. The 49ers were loaded up in the secondary. Surrender was the smart choice.

From the 49ers' 41, Smith dinks for three yards. I hate this kind of offense. It's meek, Mike.

If Peyton Manning is running, Ingram would've been penalized and fined.

Tyron Brackenridge played it beautifully. He nearly had a pick six. It's third down.

Just shy of the first down. It's decision time for Mike Singletary but, first, the two-minute warning.

It's fourth and one at the Jags 37. What would I do? I'd punt because I have three times out remaining and I wouldn't want to give the Jags a short field after a half of domination.

Smith has already thrown 26 passes. The 49ers are going for it. This could be a big mistake.

It's a full yard, too. Where's the respect for the Jaguars defense?

What a call, what a play. A play-action fake and a deep pass to Davis. He beat Ingram down the sideline for 30 yards. Daryl Smith hit Smith hard.

I'm stunned by that call. If they don't get the first down, and Davis had to look back into the sun and catch the ball over his shoulder, the Jags would've had a chance to cut the deficit to three or seven points before halftime.

It'll be third and goal from the four.

Touchdown! Smith to Gore. I'll watch his feet on replay. Wait, please.

They're going to review it but it appears to be a catch. Brackenridge broke coverage to come up on Smith, who gave the look of wanting to run for the corner.

Smith is 18 of 29 for 169, two touchdowns and a 101.1 rating. The Jags are making him the 49ers' quarterback of the future.

It's confirmed, touchdown. I'm really getting tired of replay.

Singletary is an interesting guy. He's brash and he's trying to get his quarterback to reflect that brashness. I don't like the yelling but he intrigues me.

The Jags have 46 seconds to get some points on the board or it'll be six shutout quarters on the Pacific rim.

A pass to Sims-Walker gains a first down near midfield.

Time out, Jags, at the 49ers' 48 with :17 to play in the half.

Complete to Sims-Walker at the 30 with 11 seconds to play.

Go to the end zone and then kick it.

Garrard threw underneath to Holt at the 14. Scobee will have a chip-shot attempt. This drive kind of saves the day for the Jags. The 49ers ice the kicker.

Scobee is good from 32 yards.

That's the end of the half. The yardage difference, 203-164, is misleading. A lot of that came in that last drive.

The 49ers have some players. It's all about the quarterback for them. Is Smith the real thing? Today he has been.

I need to warn you of the possibility of an early departure. The press box here is antiquated and requires that I walk through the crowd to get to the field and the locker room. Unless the game is a one-score difference, I will leave early. It's what has to be done to avoid having to walk down while everybody else is walking up.

The Jags get the ball to start the second half. They need to make a statement on this possession.

Garrard opens with a long pass to Wilford at the 49ers' 47.

A sideline shot to Mike Thomas gets another first down.

Another sideline shot to Thomas breaks big to the 15. The Jags are running at wide open throttle.

Sacked, stripped, 49ers recover. Just as quickly as it went well, it went bad. The rush came from the blind side. Lawson stripped the ball. He beat Eugene Monroe.

If the 49ers go down the field here, it could be the kill shot. The Jaguars defense must say no.

Twenty-two yard pass on first down. Derek Cox missed a tackle and Reggie Nelson made a very weak attempt along the sideline.

Some tight end named Delanie Walker is having a big day. I never heard of him.

The Jags have the run stopped. The problem is the 49ers are throwing the ball a lot.

Smith's receivers aren't glue-fingered. Michael Crabtree could've caught that pass.

Smith to Crabtree for a first down. They went at the linebackers. That's the thing that's amazed me all year. Teams are attacking the Jags linebackers with the pass.

By appearances, the 49ers had an ironclad game plan to throw the ball. It's big departure from convention for them.

Great coverage by Cox. He broke up a potential touchdown pass.

My mistake. It was dropped by Crabtree. The ball was right on the money.

The 49ers will have a chip-shot field goal attempt to stretch the lead back to 17 points. It's good by Nedney.

It's gonna be a lot of passing by the Jaguars now and the 49ers will have their ears pinned back.

The wheels are coming off for the Jags. Witherspoon bobbled the kickoff and the Jags will start at their 10.

Jones-Drew hustles. He went all the way down the field to make a block after a Lewis reception.

Sack.

Nice throw over the middle to Holt for a first down. The Jags stay alive. That would've been end of game had they had to kick.

Garrard's got to throw the ball away instead of scrambling for a few yards and taking a hit. He's too valuable to take punishment.

Should've been intercepted.

Pass to Zach Miller over the middle for a first down. This is a nice, surgical drive but it must produce a touchdown.

Jones-Drew up the middle to the 13. Now the 49ers look sluggish.

He didn't get the first down. In fact, he lost a yard. It's third and one.

He didn't get it. Kick it, Jack. Cut it to two scores.

That's the end of the third quarter so Jack Del Rio will have time to think about whether to go for the first down or attempt a field goal.

The Jags have to have three scores. Why not get one now? That's my thinking.

It appears he's going to go for it on fourth and one.

It's almost two yards.

Sacked, stripped, game over. At least, that's what I think.

The 49ers have the ball at their 34. I don't know for whom Garrard was looking because the rush got to him too quickly for me to pick out his receiver.

The Jaguars have turned the ball over eight times in their last 21 red zone possessions.

The 49ers curled up in a ball in that possession. They'll punt with about 13:20 to play.

The Jags have the ball at their 22 with 13:05 to play.

Fourth and three and they're going for it.

Pass to Jones-Drew gains a first down. What a hard run after the catch.

Over the middle to Thomas.

I wish they had that field goal.

First down at the 49ers 23 with under 10 minutes to play. They need to score quickly.

They're running. The ball is at the seven. We're nearing eight minutes to play.

Second and goal at the three. Jones-Drew is at a thousand yards for the season.
