The Jacksonville Jaguars signed veteran free agent linebacker Tank Daniels and signed rookie tight end Zach Potter and center Cecil Newton off the practice squad to the 53-man roster, the club announced today. Linebacker Clint Ingram (pictured) was placed on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder injury on December 13 against Miami. In addition, running back Josh Vaughan was signed to the practice squad today.
Daniels, 6-3, 248, has had two stints with the Philadelphia Eagles and spent the 2007 season with the New York Giants after being signed as an undrafted rookie by the Eagles in 2006. Daniels, 28, has played in 26 regular season games, nine postseason games, and has 28 career special teams tackles. He played in all 16 games for the Eagles in 2008 and ranked fourth on the team with 18 special teams tackles.
After being waived by the Eagles in 2007, Daniels was signed by the Giants to their practice squad and was elevated to the active roster for the final four regular season games. He played in all four postseason games including Super Bowl XLII. A native of Clarendon, Arkansas, he was a four-year starter at Harding and was the first player from the school to play in the NFL. He had his No. 3 jersey retired in 2008 after recording 237 tackles, 34 tackles for loss, 17.5 sacks and seven interceptions during his collegiate career.
Potter, 6-7, 280, has spent the past 14 weeks on the club’s practice squad after signing on September 17. The 23-year-old Potter was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by the New York Jets on May 1. A native of Omaha, Neb., he played in 50 games with 24 starts at Nebraska. His career totals included 96 tackles, 28 tackles for loss and eight sacks. He set a school record as a senior with three blocked kicks and ranked second on the club with 16 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks.
Newton, 6-2, 310, has spent the first 15 weeks on the club’s practice squad after signing as an undrafted rookie in May. Newton, 23, is one of five Jaguars players signed immediately following this year’s draft to be signed to the active roster, joining linebacker Russell Allen, defensive end Jeremy Navarre, defensive end Julius Williams and running back Brock Bolen. Newton was a four-year letterman at Tennessee State and was part of an offensive line that the led the conference in rushing for two consecutive seasons.
Vaughan, 6-0, 232, played in all four preseason games with the Jaguars before he was waived on final cuts. He was originally signed as an undrafted rookie by Tampa Bay and was signed by the Jaguars on August 11. He was a four-year letterman at Richmond and finished with 3,339 rushing yards and 34 touchdowns including 20 as a senior.
