Marrone: Quiet on the QBs

JACKSONVILLE – Quarterback remains the story, and the story remains uncertain.

That was expected early Tuesday around the Jaguars, and that was how it played out as Head Coach Doug Marrone opted against sharing his plan at the position for this week.

Will Chad Henne start in Preseason Week 3 Thursday?

Or will it be Blake Bortles?

Marrone on Tuesday said he's not sharing that officially. At least not yet.

"I'm just trying to find the best time," Marrone said early Tuesday afternoon as the Jaguars continued preparing to play the Carolina Panthers in Week 3 of the 2017 preseason Thursday at EverBank Field.

Marrone said he has a plan in mind, but doesn't to share it publicly until he is absolutely certain of the plan – and until he speaks to Bortles and Henne about it. He said he expects to share the plan publically before Thursday's game.

"We're not going to play any games," Marrone said. "We'll get it out to local people."

Bortles, the Jaguars' starting quarterback since Week 4 of the 2014 season, started the first two 2017 preseason games and worked with the ones exclusively through much of training camp. Henne, who started 22 games for the Jaguars from 2012-2014 before serving as Bortles' backup since Week 4 in 2014, played two series with the first team against Tampa Bay last Tuesday.

Marrone said after that game the quarterback position is "up for grabs," and Bortles and Henne both have worked with the first team in practice this week.

"I'm really looking to see the game," Marrone said. "No one really hurt themselves as far as the practice goes, which I pretty much expected. Now, it's going to be a matter of what happens in this game. Afterward, I don't know. I don't like to make quick decisions. We'll see how it goes."

Marrone was asked if he anticipated both Henne and Bortles working with the first team Thursday.

"I think to get an evaluation – that's something we're talking about," Marrone said.

Marrone said his hope for Thursday remains that Bortles or Henne "will go out and take" the starting position.

"I'm not trying to play any games or anything," Marrone said. "I'm just really trying to figure out, 'Who's going to be that guy in that position who can lead our team, and who best gives us an opportunity to win?' It's really that simple, and there are so many things that factor into it."
