Axalta and Jaguars partner on new stadium murals

The Louvre. The Met. TIAA Bank Field. What do these three places have in common? Each now contains one-of-a-kind works of art.

The Jaguars and Axalta have partnered to add a fresh coat of a paint to TIAA Bank Field in the form of larger-than-life murals around the stadium’s main concourse. The first mural made its debut this past December in the southwest corner near sections 103 and 203. Over the course of the next four years, three more Jacksonville-themed murals will be created in other corners of the stadium.

Nancy Lockhart is the Global Color Marketing Manager for Axalta. She knows firsthand how art can create a sense of place for any community.

“This mural is a great example of how color and design can combine to make a striking statement about this iconic area,” said Lockhart. “The skyline, the Jaguar, and the dynamic use of color come together to give the stadium energy and pizzazz.  This gives fans one more reason to be excited about the Jacksonville Jaguars.”

All four murals will utilize First Coast artists to draw upon the themes and imagery unique to the region. The first mural was conceptualized and painted by Shaun Thurston, whose work can be seen all around Jacksonville on buildings such as the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Science and History.

"We wanted to include the river, the skyline, a Jaguar and DUUUVAL all in one piece,” said Thurston. “The mural is done entirely freehand with spray paint and a scissor lift. The crew I worked with made the whole project run smoothly from start to finish."

Thurston expressed his gratitude for the chance to work on the project, and his hard work may have even inspired the team to victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

"I was really excited to be asked to paint a new mural inside the stadium," he said. "The night before the game I was almost finished with the wall. Only about 8 hours of work remained, so instead of leaving it unfinished for the fans, I stayed until 6 a.m. putting on the finishing touches. The next day, our Jags won. You're welcome!"

The Jaguars will celebrate their 25th season of play in 2019 and TIAA Bank Field will also celebrate its silver anniversary. The new murals emerging around the main concourse in the coming years will add new color and personality to a stadium erected in the mid-90s. The goal of this partnership is to express the pride and passion of Jaguars fans in a unique, creative presentation.

“Almost every fan visiting TIAA Bank Field on game day takes a step on the main concourse, which circles the entire stadium,” said Scott Massey, Senior Vice President of Corporate Partnerships for the Jaguars. “We’re thrilled to have Axalta on board to help us put our best face forward by injecting some color and Jaguars spirit to our facility.”
