First Off the Field: A day for rest and red zone

JACKSONVILLE – The scrimmage is nearing, and the past two days were taxing.

So Friday morning around Jaguars 2015 Training Camp became in part about being smart and in part about resting players in need of a break.

The Jaguars worked in shorts and shoulder pads on Day 7 of training camp Friday, taking the day before the team's controlled scrimmage to rest veteran starters such as Otto linebacker Dan Skuta and middle linebacker Paul Posluszny.

That came during a relatively light practice with a walkthrough feel.

"We took the pads off and had a little more focus on mentality and mindset," Bradley said late Friday morning after the Jaguars worked for about an hour, 45 minutes in 89-degree temperatures at the Florida Blue Health and Wellness practice fields.

The Jaguars worked some lighter team and red zone work without the full-contact work that highlighted Wednesday and Thursday.

"The topic today that we talked was explosive plays," Bradley said, emphasizing that he thought the offense did well in red-zone drills. "We talked about capturing explosives – so on offense getting them and defense minimizing them."

Defensive tackle Jared Odrick and tight end Julius Thomas also had the day off to rest knee and back issues, respectively, though neither issue is thought to be serious. Guard Brandon Linder and wide receiver Allen Hurns missed with knee soreness.

The Jaguars will hold a scrimmage at EverBank Field Saturday at 6:15 p.m. That event is free and open to the public.

Bradley said the only player he expects to miss the scrimmage is second-year wide receiver Marqise Lee. He is considered week to week with a hamstring injury sustained Wednesday.

Bradley said special teams will be incorporated heavily in the scrimmage and the team also will try to work specific situations to prepare for the preseason. The Jaguars open the preseason at home against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, August 14.

Also Friday, cornerback Dwayne Gratz (calf) and cornerback Peyton Thompson (hamstring) remained out of practice.

Defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks (knee) and safety James Sample (arm) remained on the Physically Unable to Perform list with defensive end Chris Clemons remaining on the active non-football injury list. Rookie Dante Fowler expected to be placed on injured reserve with a torn anterior cruciate ligament shortly before the regular season.

On a relatively light day of practice, highlights were relatively few, but the offense and quarterback Blake Bortles looked good in red-zone drills. During one stretch in the red zone, Bortles threw touchdown passes to tight ends Marcedes Lewis and Clay Harbor and wide receiver Arrelious Benn.
