First off the field: Day 17

JACKSONVILLE – This was shorter, and a bit cooler.

It also was one of the Jaguars' final practices before the second 2021 preseason game, with the team working for about an hour and a half in 90-degree temperatures that felt like 99 in Day 17 of 2021 Training Camp practice Friday at the Dream Finders Homes Practice Complex.

"We actually got a little bit of a break today," quarterback Trevor Lawrence said with a smile after Friday's practice. "It was a little cooler, but yesterday it felt like it was over 100."

Friday's work came a day after a taxing late-afternoon practice, a session that marked the hottest to date in Jaguars '21 camp – with the heat index climbing close to 110. Head Coach Urban Meyer moved practice Friday to 11 a.m. from Thursday's 1 p.m. start.

"We're later in the week now," Meyer said following a Friday practice in light shoulder pads, shorts and helmets. "I was going to cut practice anyway, so I met with some of the leaders: 'What's the best way to do this?'"

Meyer has joked with the media throughout camp about some warm practices being comparable to practices when he coached at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Some early '21 camp practices that seemed warm didn't compare to practices Meyer remembered from Gainesville.

"Yesterday was Gainesville hot," he said with a smile, referring to Thursday afternoon's practice.

The Jaguars on Friday worked on situations preparing for Monday's Preseason Week 2 game against the New Orleans Saints. They worked on special teams, with specific drills of first-team offense and defense against scout team simulating the Saints.

Meyer said this week's practice and preparation schedule was more similar to a regular-season game week than earlier weeks in '21 camp.

"That's why we went to game week," Meyer said. "We wanted with a new staff – [offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell], myself and [defensive coordinator] Joe [Cullen] thought it was important to go ahead and game plan. This is basically an in-season schedule modified because of training camp rules."

Meyer and Lawrence spoke to the media following practice Friday.

"Everywhere I've lived it's been really hot: Georgia, South Carolina …" Lawrence said. "I'm kind of used to it, but I don't know if you ever really get used to it. When summer rolls around every year it's like, 'Man, it gets hotter every year.'

"It has been good for us. I know we're going to be in great shape and we're going to be conditioned to it."

Here's a look at Friday's practice:

Friday's work was comparatively light, with more focus than a normal training camp practice on preparing for the opponent. That meant fewer huge plays than normal in the passing game, but safety Rudy Ford did have a nice interception late in practice on a pass from reserve quarterback Jake Luton.
