First off the field: Training Camp Day 9

JACKSONVILLE – This was a light day – comparatively speaking, anyway.

That was the plan, and that was how it played out for the Jaguars on Day 9 of 2017 Training Camp – a day on which the team worked for about two hours in shorts and helmets on the practice fields adjacent to EverBank Field.

Sunday's practice came in the wake of a week in which the Jaguars worked five consecutive days in full pads from Monday through Friday night's practice inside EverBank. The team also had worked in full pads on the Saturday before that stretch.
Sunday's practice, conducted in 87-degree temperatures and slightly overcast conditions, was closed to the public after the first eight had been open.

The Jaguars are scheduled to practice against the New England Patriots Monday and Tuesday in Foxboro, Mass., and will play the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots in the 2017 preseason opener at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro Thursday.

Former Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew attended practice in his role as an analyst for NFL Network.

A look at Training Camp Day 9:
*This wasn't a day given to standout plays, particularly compared to the intense, padded work that went on throughout last week. But rookie wide receiver Dede Westbrook continued to show up, and there were several standout plays in 11-on-11 and 7-on-7 work. …

*Rookie wide receiver Keelan Cole continued to flash, catching two long passes in a three-play stretch midway through practice. He caught one pass off a carom and turned an intermediate route into a long gain with a run after the catch. …

*Tight end Marcedes Lewis caught a 15-yard pass from quarterback Blake Bortles early in 11-on-11 work early in practice. …

Westbrook, a fourth-round selection in the 2017 NFL Draft and the Biletnikoff Award winner last season for college football's best wide receiver, continued to make plays in training camp. He caught a long pass from backup quarterback Chad Henne Sunday, beating a defender down the middle and scoring on an easy touchdown reception.
Defensive end Calais Campbell remained out of practice with an undisclosed injury, working on the side throughout practice. Guard Earl Watford remained out of practice, as did safety Jarrod Wilson, tight end Mychal Rivera and linebacker Justin Horton.

Cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and Aaron Colvin and rookie fullback remained on the Physically Unable to Perform list. All three have been on PUP and out of practice since the beginning of camp.
The Jaguars on Sunday signed seven-year veteran Jeron Johnson and released third-year safety James Sample. The latter was a fourth-round selection in the 2015 NFL Draft who played just four games in two seasons because of injuries. Johnson played with the Seattle Seahawks from 2011-2014, with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2015 and the Seahawks last season. …

*The Jaguars on Sunday removed the Physically Unable to Perform designation from rookie fullback Marquez Williams. He was cleared medically to practice and practiced Sunday. …
