Jaguars claim Stanzi, Knox off waivers

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars added another quarterback to their roster Tuesday.

Ricky Stanzi, a third-year veteran from the University of Iowa, was claimed by the Jaguars off waivers on Tuesday from the Kansas City Chiefs, with the team also claiming first-year linebacker Kyle Knox off waivers from Seattle.

The team released rookie running back De'Leon Eskridge and fourth-year tight end Isaiah Stanback to make room for Knox and Stanzi.

The Jaguars' roster now stands at 75 players.

The acquisition of Stanzi gives the Jaguars five quarterbacks entering Thursday's preseason finale at Atlanta.

Chad Henne is expected to start the game in place of Blaine Gabbert, who sustained a sprained thumb in the second week of the preseason. Gabbert last week was named the team's starter for the regular-season opener against Kansas City.

Gabbert will miss the final preseason game, but Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said Gabbert is expected to be able to start gripping the ball this weekend, which is the next step in his rehabilitation process. He would begin throwing after that, and Bradley said this week he has heard nothing to contradict the initial prognosis that Gabbert will be ready for Kansas City September 8.

The Jaguars also have free agent rookie Matt Scott and veteran Mike Kafka on the roster. Bradley said the team has not yet decided whether Scott or Kafka will enter the game in place of Henne, who is expected to play about 15 plays against Atlanta.

Stanzi (6-feet-4, 228 pounds), a fifth-round selection by Kansas City in the 2011 NFL Draft, spent two seasons on the Chiefs' active roster, but did not play a regular-season game. He was active three games last season, serving as backup quarterback in six games in 2011.

Stanzi started 35 games at Iowa with a 26-9 record as a starter. He completed 542 of 907 passes for 7,377 yards with 56 touchdown passes. He threw 25 touchdowns and six interceptions as a senior.

Knox (6-1, 200) spent the 2012 preseason with the Seahawks before being waived on final cuts.  He joined the Seahawks' practice squad the final two weeks of the regular season.

He started 37 of 46 games at Fresno State, posting 215 tackles and 4.5 sacks. He registered 55 tackles as a senior with six tackles for loss, two passes defensed and a sack.
