The Jacksonville Jaguars opened their 2006 training camp with a morning session in front of 2,474 fans with all 85 players under contract and in attendance, including all six draft picks.
"I'm very happy to have all our guys signed and here on time," said head coach Jack Del Rio. "I think Paul Vance has done a great job working with the agents in getting deals done and we're happy to have everybody here. As a head coach to go into camp with a full roster, everybody signed, here on time, that's a good way to do business. It's a great way to start camp."
Two players, tight end Brian Jones and safety Jamaal Fudge, did not practice due to illness. Safety Donovin Darius and center Brad Meester returned to practice after both missed parts of 2005 with season-ending injuries. Darius was lost in Week Two with a torn ACL and Meester tore a biceps in Week 13.
"Both of them have completed their rehab and they are back practicing full-go with the team. In both cases we'll be smart. We're going to have some prescribed rest of our own doing just to be smart. I'm really glad to have them back. They're both great leaders. They're both the right kind of guys," said Del Rio.
The Jaguars held their second practice session at 7:15 p.m. under the lights on the practice fields at Alltel Stadium. Camp will continue on Sunday with two practice sessions at 11:00 a.m. (special teams practice) and 7:15 p.m. The first full-pads practice will be Monday evening.
NOTE OF THE DAY: UNDRAFTED FREE AGENTS FIGHT FOR A ROSTER SPOT: Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio has made it clear that an undrafted rookie free agent has an opportunity to make the final 53-man roster. Since Del Rio took over the helm in 2003, there have been seven undrafted free agents on the club's opening day roster. FB/KR Derrick Wimbush and OG Dan Connolly both earned a roster spot in 2005. The Jaguars currently have 11 undrafted rookies in training camp.
