Leftwich talks progress

Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio today announced that the team and first-round draft choice Byron Leftwich are close on the terms of a contract.

"We are making significant progress and feel it could happen soon," said Del Rio. "We're encouraged by today's events and we look forward to getting our first draft pick into training camp. He has a lot of catching up to do. We're close enough to where it could happen real quick or it could take a day or so to iron out a couple of details. But it looks like it is approaching the end."

The team has waived wide receiver Kevin Simmonds, who had been signed as an undrafted rookie on April 28.

On Wednesday, the Jaguars will practice from 9:30 to 11:15 a.m. and from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. (special teams). Del Rio will be available to the media following the morning practice, and players will be available from 11:30 to 12:30 p.m. On Thursday, the Jaguars will practice from 9:00 to 10:45 a.m., and there will be no interview availability.
