JACKSONVILLE – If this wasn't a consensus, it wasn't far off.
If that near-consensus is correct – and very little can be assumed when it comes to mocking the NFL Draft – the Jaguars could be adding one of college football's most athletic players come April.
Isaiah Simmons, a hybrid safety/linebacker from Clemson University, was the selection of choice for the Jaguars by four of six analysts in the latest jaguars.com 2020 mock draft tracker. All four analysts mocked Simmons to the Jaguars at No. 9 overall.
Ryan Wilson of CBSSports.com called Simmons "a physical freak who can line up anywhere on the field, including deep safety."
Bucky Brooks of NFL.com agreed with Simmons as the selection.
"Simmons' versatility as a back-seven defender could make him a disruptive force as a primary playmaker for the Jaguars," Brooks wrote and NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah wrote that Simmons could play linebacker or safety in the NFL.
"Pairing Simmons with last year's first-round pick, Josh Allen, will give the Jaguars two elite defensive athletes to build around," Jeremiah wrote.
Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN and Jason McIntyre of Fox Sports projected South Carolina defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to the Jaguars at No. 9 overall.
"Adding an interior monster in Kinlaw to the likes of Calais Campbell, Josh Allen, Yannick Ngakoue and Myles Jack makes your front seven the best in the division," McIntyre wrote.
The analysts didn't agree as much on a player for the Jaguars' second first-round selection – No. 20 overall – but they were nearly unanimous about the position. Five of the six analysts projected cornerback there.
Three of the analysts projected cornerback Trevon Diggs of Alabama to the Jaguars at No. 20, with Brooks calling Diggs a "long, rangy cover corner with natural press skills who would be a perfect fit in the Jaguars' Cover 3 scheme."
Two of the analysts projected Florida cornerback C.J. Henderson to the Jaguars at No. 20.
"Henderson won't replace Jalen Ramsey, but he's a cover corner with ball skills," Wilson wrote, with Jeremiah writing that, "The Jaguars have a need at cornerback, and Henderson is widely viewed as the second-best player at the position in this draft class."
