Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Indianapolis Colts January 9th, 2022

JACKSONVILLE – Josh Allen is excited about the 2022 season.

That has been true since late in the 2021 season, and Allen has made that clear to anyone who will listen. There are multiple reasons. Some are personal. Many are about team.

All are intertwined a huge season for the fourth-year outside linebacker.

"I'm still working," Allen said. "I'm still trying to find my craft. I'm still trying to put the pieces together. But I know I'm taking strides to where I need to be."

Allen added, "Your best players have to be the best players every week to win in this league. I want to be one of those guys who can contribute a lot every week."

Allen, the No. 7 overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft and one of five permanent Jaguars captains this season, joined senior writer John Oehser for this week's O-Zone Podcast. Among the topics: His mindset as he begins a fourth season that's important for him and the organization.

"I'm confident in my game right now," he said. "I know if I stay committed and stay true to what I do, it's going to come through. My confidence is really high right now and it's going to continue to stay there."

And while this being his fourth season makes this a "contract" season, Allen said that doesn't fully explain his motivation or enthusiasm entering Sunday's regular-season opener against the Washington Commanders at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

"The money comes with it," Allen said. "If my goal is to win Defensive Player of the Year and to be a first-team All-Pro … that comes with it. Why would I lower my standard to one thing when I know if I shoot for the stars it's going to come with it?

"Let's reach for the stars, because if you put that work in you can achieve it."

And Allen said without a doubt his enthusiasm extends beyond personal goals to a team that he believes will improve dramatically after winning four games over the last two seasons.

"I'm excited about this group," he said. "I'm excited about Sunday. I think it's going to be the start of something special."
