Official: Caldwell, defensive staff named

JACKSONVILLE – The Jaguars officially have a new defensive coordinator.

Mike Caldwell, a veteran of 24 seasons as a coach/player and the inside linebackers coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers the past three seasons, has been named the Jaguars' defensive coordinator.

The Jaguars announced the move Thursday along with eight other defensive assistants: Bob Sutton senior defensive assistant, Brentson Buckner defensive line, Bill Shuey outside linebackers, Toby Gilbert inside linebackers, Cody Grimm safeties, Deshea Townsend passing-game coordinator/cornerbacks, Rory Segrest assistant defensive line and Patrick Reilly defensive quality control.

The Jaguars on Thursday also named Press Taylor offensive coordinator and Heath Farwell special teams coordinator. They named Doug Pederson the seventh head coach in franchise history on February 4.

Caldwell, 50, played linebacker 11 NFL seasons with six teams and has coached with four teams. This is his first coordinator position.

Caldwell, a third-round selection from Middle Tennessee State by the Cleveland Browns in the 1993 NFL Draft, played with the Browns (1993-1995), Baltimore Ravens (1996), Arizona Cardinals (1997), Philadelphia Eagles (1998-2001), Chicago Bears (2002) and Carolina Panthers (2003). He started 49 of 159 games played, registering 521 tackles and eight interceptions.

Caldwell spent 2008 coaching the Eagles – 2008-2009 as a defensive quality control coach, 2010 as assistant linebackers coach and 2011-2012 as linebackers coach. He was the Arizona Cardinals' inside linebackers coach from 2013-2014 and the New York Jets' assistant head coach/inside linebackers coach from 2015-2018.

He coached under current Kansas City Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid while in Philadelphia, then moved to the Jets under then-head coach Todd Bowles. He served under Bowles the past three seasons with Bowles as the Buccaneers' defensive coordinator.

  • Bob Sutton, senior defensive assistant. Sutton, a 22-year NFL coaching veteran, spent last season as a senior defensive assistant with the Jaguars.   • Brentson Buckner, defensive line. Buckner, a nine-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the last two seasons as the Cardinals' defensive line coach. He played 12 NFL seasons with four teams – the Pittsburgh Steelers (1994-1996), Cincinnati Bengals (1997), San Francisco 49ers (1998-2000) and Carolina Panthers (2001-2005). Coaching career to date: Cardinals defensive line (2020-2021), Oakland Raiders defensive line (2019), Buccaneers defensive line (2018), Cardinals defensive line (2013-2017), Steelers coaching intern (2010–2012), Charlotte (N.C.) Northside Christian head coach (2008-2009).
  • Bill Shuey, outside linebackers. Shuey, a 16-year NFL coaching veteran, served as the Bears' outside linebackers coach last season. Career to date: Bears outside linebackers (2021), Bears pass-rush analyst/assistant linebackers (2019-2020), Bears defensive quality control (2018), Widener assistant head coach/defensive coordinator (2014-2017), West Chester linebackers (2012-2013), Eagles linebackers (2008-2010), Eagles defensive quality control (2007), Eagles offensive quality control (2003-2006), Eagles training camp coordinator/assistant to head coach (2001-2002), Eagles training camp assistant (2000).
  • Tony Gilbert, inside linebackers. Gilbert, a third-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the last two seasons as the Jaguars' assistant linebackers coach. He played seven NFL seasons at linebacker for the Cardinals (2003), Jaguars (2003-2007) and Falcons (2008-2009). Coaching career to date: Jaguars assistant linebackers (2020-2021), Central Florida defensive quality control (2018-2019), North Carolina defensive quality control/linebackers (2015-2017), John Milledge Academy defensive coordinator/linebackers (2014-2015), Georgia Military College defensive line/linebackers (2013-2014), Auburn defensive graduate assistant/linebackers (2012) and Georgia assistant strength and conditioning (2011).
  • Cody Grimm, safeties. Grimm, a four-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the past three seasons as a defense/special teams assistant with the Buccaneers. He played safety three seasons with the Buccaneers from 2010-2012. Coaching career to date: Buccaneers defense/special teams assistant (2019-2021), Virginia Tech defensive quality control (2014-2017).
  • Deshea Townsend, passing game-coordinator/cornerbacks. Townsend, a nine-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the past three seasons as the Bears' secondary coach. He played cornerback 12 seasons for the Steelers from 1998-2009 and played for the Indianapolis Colts in 2010. Coaching career to date: Bears secondary (2019–2021), New York Giants assistant defensive backs (2018), Tennessee Titans defensive backs (2016-2017), Mississippi State cornerbacks (2013–2015), Cardinals assistant defensive backs (2011–2012).
  • Rory Segrest, assistant defensive line. Segrest, a six-year NFL coaching veteran, spent the last four seasons with the University of Louisiana as the assistant head coach/defensive line coach. Coaching career to date: Louisiana (assistant head coach/defensive line (2017-2020), Arkansas defensive line/specialists (2014-2016), Samford defensive line/special teams (2011-2013), Eagles defensive line (2009-2010), Eagles special teams coordinator (2007-2009) Eagles special teams quality control/assistant defensive line (2006-2007), Southeast Missouri State (1999-2001), Auburn defensive graduate assistant (1997-1999), Alabama graduate assistant (1994).
  • Patrick Reilly, defensive quality control. Reilly, a second-year NFL coaching veteran, spent last season as the Jaguars' defensive quality control coach.
