Cody Grimm enters his first season with the Jaguars as the team's safeties coach. Grimm spent the last three seasons in Tampa Bay as the Buccaneers defensive/special teams assistant after serving as the defensive quality control coach at Virginia Tech. He brings seven years of NFL coaching experience and three years of NFL playing experience as a safety for the Buccaneers.
In 2021, Grimm assisted a Buccaneers defensive unit that ranked third in passes defensed (85) in the NFL, fifth in points allowed (353), tied for eighth in INTs (17) and tied for fourth in INTs returned for a TD (two).
In 2020, Grimm assisted in the development of S Antoine Winfield Jr., who earned PFWA All-Rookie honors in his first season in Tampa Bay. Winfield was also named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Month in September. The University of Minnesota product started all 16 games for the Buccaneers, recording 91 tackles (one for loss), six passes defensed, four quarterback hits, 3.0 sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. Winfield joined S Jamal Adams as the only defensive backs with 75-or-more tackles and 3.0-plus sacks in 2020.
In his first season in 2019, Grimm assisted with a secondary unit comprised of predominantly first- and second-year players. Tampa Bay's first- and second-year defensive players accounted for 68 passes defensed and eight interceptions, which both led all NFL teams among players with two-or-fewer years of experience.
Prior to his time with the Buccaneers, Grimm spent the 2014-17 seasons at his alma mater, Virginia Tech. In 2017, while serving as the defensive quality control coach, Grimm tutored a defense led by LB Tremaine Edmunds, who earned Third Team AP All-America honors and Third Team All-ACC safety Terrell Edmunds. In 2018, the duo became the first brothers to be selected in the first round of the same NFL draft.
Grimm lettered four years (2006-09) as a linebacker at Virginia Tech, where he joined the team as a walk-on. As a senior, Grimm led the nation with seven forced fumbles and amassed 106 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and four sacks, earning First Team All-ACC and Third Team AP All-America honors.
A native of Fairfax, Va., Grimm was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Buccaneers, where he played three seasons at safety. In his career, Grimm appeared in 23 games with 12 starts, totaling 62 tackles, three passes defensed, two interceptions and one interception returned for a touchdown.
