Jim Bob Cooter enters his first season with the Jacksonville Jaguars as the passing game coordinator. Cooter recently spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles as a coaching consultant in 2021 and the Jets as the running backs coach (2019-20) after stops with the Lions, Broncos, Chiefs and Colts. He brings 13 years of NFL coaching experience after playing quarterback at the University of Tennessee from 2002-06.
While in New York, Cooter coached RB Frank Gore, who rushed for 653 yards and two TDs in 2020. In his rookie season, RB La'Mical Perine carried the ball 64 times for 232 yards and one TD. In his first season with the Jets, Cooter helped free agent signing RB Le'Veon Bell produce 1,250 yards from scrimmage to become one of six Jets rushers with a 1,200-plus scrimmage yards season in the last 20 years.
After initially joining the Lions as a quarterbacks coach in 2014, Cooter was promoted to offensive coordinator in Week 8 of the 2015 season. During his time in Detroit, QB Matthew Stafford ranked among the top 10 in the NFL in completion percentage (64.9 percent), passing yards (21,069), touchdowns (128) and passing plays of 25-plus yards (151). In 2015, the Lions led the NFL in red zone efficiency (69.39), while the offense produced eight fourth-quarter game-winning drives in 2016, with five different players catching at least 50 passes (only the fifth team in league history to do so). The Lions made two playoff appearances during Cooter's time with the team and finished with a 30-28 record during his time as an offensive coordinator.
Prior to his time in Detroit, Cooter served as the Broncos offensive assistant in 2013. Denver's offense led the NFL in multiple categories, including total yards per game (465.3), total touchdowns (76) and points per game (37.9) and were AFC Champions, earning a Super Bowl XLVIII appearance. Denver set numerous single-season offensive records including individual passing yards (Peyton Manning, 5,477), team total points (606) and individual passing TDs (Peyton Manning – 55).
In his lone season with Kansas City in 2012, Cooter was part of a Chiefs offensive staff that oversaw the fifth-ranked rushing offense in the league, producing 149.7 yards per game, as RB Jamaal Charles finished the season with 1,509 yards (fourth-most in the league) and earned Pro Bowl recognition.
Cooter entered the NFL coaching ranks with Indianapolis in 2009, serving on the Colts staff in a variety of roles as the team won back-to-back AFC South titles in 2009 and 2010, earning a Super Bowl XLIV appearance.
A former quarterback at the University of Tennessee, Cooter got his coaching start at his alma mater as a graduate assistant from 2007-08.
