Mike Rutenberg is in his second season as the assistant linebackers coach and seventh season with the Jaguars. Previously, he served two seasons as the team’s defensive assistant (2013-14) and three seasons as the assistant defensive backs coach (2015-17). Rutenberg works with Linebackers Coach Mark Collins, as well as assisting Defensive Coordinator Todd Wash.
Rutenberg helped LBs Telvin Smith Sr. (134) and Myles Jack (107) each record career-highs in tackles as Smith finished with the sixth-most tackles in the NFL in 2018. Smith posted two INTs and was one of two players in the NFL to record at least 130 tackles and register a pick six. Jack, who recorded the first TD of his career in Week 1, joined Smith as the only LB duo in the NFL to each record at least 100 tackles and a pick six in 2018. Jack was one of three players in the NFL to play 100 percent of his team’s defensive snaps, joining Broncos S Justin Simmons and Eagles S Malcolm Jenkins.
Prior to joining the Jaguars in 2013, Rutenberg served as defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator at New Mexico State. In 2011, he guided the group to nine INTs and 32 passes defensed. Prior to joining the New Mexico State staff, Rutenberg spent three years (2006-08) at UCLA where he was the Bruins’ defensive intern and graduate assistant.
Rutenberg served as the assistant to Washington Redskins Head Coach Joe Gibbs from 2004-05. He served as a player personnel intern and assistant in 2003 for the Redskins.
Rutenberg, born Oct. 29, 1981, received his bachelor’s degree from Cornell in 2003. He and his wife, Stacey, reside in Jacksonville.
