Walker conference call

The following is a transcript of Mike Walker's (WR, Central Florida) conference call following his selection with the 15th selection of the third round in the 2007 NFL Draft.

(on being drafted in the third round) "I was just hoping to get here. This is a blessing. I was just trying to get in the NFL, it didn't matter what pick or what round. When you get in there it all comes out."

(on his ACL injury and how he improved at the combine) "When you put all the best players in the country in one room I think it all comes out. Speed, routes, everything. I went in there with a chip on my shoulder, trying to show everybody that I am one of the best receivers in this draft."

(on his combine workout) "We did a mock combine where I was training. I ran a 4.28 twice on the track so I knew my knee was back in shape and everything was going good. I knew I had my speed back and it was all just a matter of putting it all together at the combine."

(on if he is going to bring a chip on his shoulder to the Jaguars) "Definitely. I always have a chip on my shoulder. This is football. You can never get comfortable. I think that is where a lot of players fall off in the game. I am always going to have a chip on my shoulder and I'm always going to have a swagger and an attitude. I am working to be the best."

(on coming back from his injury) "I worked hard. I busted my butt. I had a few complications at the beginning right after my surgery. It was a mind thing. I thank my family and the UCF football program for keeping me in there. They made me work, believed in me and they knew I could come back."

(on what he can be as a receiver in the NFL) "I know they are a great team. They have a great offense and a great quarterback in Byron Leftwich. They have two great running backs in Maurice Jones-Drew and Fred Taylor. They have some good receivers, a good team overall and a great defense. I think we can do a lot of good things."

(on his background) "I was always in sports growing up. I thought I was going to be a basketball player, but those dreams went away when I started realizing I was not tall enough at six-two. I always played football, but my main sport was basketball that I loved. I grew up with a nice childhood and was always involved in activities. I was always one of the leaders on my team no matter what I played if it was little league, high school or college. I knew I had a good mindset to be a good football player. I always worked hard and was always first in line on every team I played on. I was always a standup guy. That was my motto. Be a standup guy. I didn't start playing football until my junior year of high school and I only played cornerback as a junior. I played one year as a receiver and I came along and took my team to their first ever state championship game. We fell short and I had a few big offers. That was my first time going through the recruiting process and I kind of rushed my decision and committed to UCF which I think was a great decision because I am in the position I am now. As soon as I got there I went to work. I had some great coaches there along the way and they made me work to be the best I could be. I'm here now."

(on first committing to Ole Miss) "I committed to Ole Miss and just felt uncomfortable the next day when I woke up. My dad said he couldn't sleep and I couldn't sleep. I just wasn't happy so UCF came over the next night and made me feel a whole lot better so I changed my commitment."

(on playing in Florida close to Central Florida) "It doesn't matter. I'm just ready to play football. I have been out of football since my senior year ended. I'm ready to crank it back up and put on some pads and go back to work."

(on if he had any inkling the Jaguars would take him) "After my pro day I didn't really talk to anyone that much. Coach (Todd) Monken was at my pro day and I think I did a pretty good job impressing them. He was impressed with me, but I haven't heard from him since. That kind of threw me off a little bit. I just kept faith, but I didn't know."

(on if he visited Jacksonville prior to the draft) "No."
