Jaguars release RB Chris Ivory, three others as March 14 start of 2018 NFL League Year approaches

JACKSONVILLE – Chris Ivory’s time with the Jaguars is over.

Ivory, a running back signed by the Jaguars as an unrestricted free agent during the 2016 offseason, on Friday was released as a team prepared for the March 14 start of the 2018 NFL League year.

Ivory, who started four games with the team in two seasons, was released along with three other players as the Jaguars re-set their roster and cleared room on their salary cap with the league year and the accompanying unrestricted free agency period approaching.

Others released along with Ivory Friday: rookie defensive back Jarrod Harper, rookie running back I’Tavius Mathers and second-year wide receiver Larry Pinkard.

Ivory, an eighth-year veteran who played three seasons with the New Orleans Saints and three more with the New York Jets before joining the Jaguars, rushed for 821 yards and four touchdowns in two seasons with the Jaguars.

He played 11 games in 2016 and rushed for 439 yards and three touchdowns while averaging 3.8 yards per carry. He played in 14 games this past season, starting three and finishing the season with 382 yards and a touchdown while averaging 3.4 yards per carry.

Ivory has rushed for 4,852 yards and 28 touchdowns in eight NFL while averaging 4.4 yards a carry. He rushed for an AFC-leading 1,070 yards and seven touchdowns while making the Pro Bowl in 2015 for the Jets.

Ivory’s release reportedly saves the Jaguars about $4 million against the cap for 2018.

Ivory’s release leaves the Jaguars with six running backs on the roster: Leonard Fournette, T.J. Yeldon, Corey Grant and Tyler Gaffney (reserve/injured) along with two players who signed futures contracts earlier this offseason: Tim Cook and Brandon Wilds. Fullback Tommy Bohanon also is on the roster.
