JACKSONVILLE – A big play Sunday, an honor a few days later.
That's Jaydon Mickens' story for the second time in what is becoming a memorable season for the Jaguars' first-year wide receiver.
Mickens on Wednesday morning was named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.
Mickens, promoted from the Jaguars' practice squad to the active roster on October 21, turned in one of the team's key plays in a 30-24 victory over the Seattle Seahawks at EverBank Field this past Sunday. His 72-yard third-quarter punt return to the Seahawks' 1-yard line set up rookie running back Leonard Fournette's touchdown run on the ensuing play.
That gave the Jaguars a 24-10 lead that they extended to 27-10 before Seattle rallied in the fourth quarter.
Mickens became the first returner in Jaguars history to be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week multiple times. He also received the honor when he returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in the Jaguars' 23-7 victory over Cincinnati on November 5.
Mickens became the first Jaguars player to be named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week twice in a season since 2005. Kicker Josh Scobee received the honor twice that season.
Mickens, whose 72-yard return was the longest of his career and the fifth-longest in franchise history, is tied for the AFC lead in punt returns with a 13.1-yard average on 18 returns.
Mickens is one of four Jaguars players to be named AFC Player of the week this season. The others: defensive end Calais Campbell (four sacks, Week 1), linebacker Telvin Smith (10 tackles and interception for a touchdown, Week 5) and cornerback A.J. Bouye (interception to set up game-winning field goal in overtime, Week 10).
