JACKSONVILLE – The first wave of 2014 cuts included at least one familiar name.
Mike Harris, a cornerback who played extensively in the team's nickel packages the last two seasons, was among 11 players released by the Jaguars on Sunday afternoon.
The Jaguars' roster now stands at 79 players, with four more moves needed to reach the league limit of 75 players by Tuesday, August 26 at 4 p.m. EDT.
"It's always a tough time – it's just difficult," Jaguars Head Coach Gus Bradley said Sunday afternoon, adding that he spoke to each player released.
The Jaguars also released seven other players with NFL experience Sunday: wide receiver Ramses Barden, linebacker Allen Bradford, guard/center Antoine Caldwell, linebacker Josh Hull, running back Harvey Unga, safety Joe Young and center Patrick Lewis.
The Jaguars also waived/injured veteran defensive tackle David Carter (knee). Rookie long snapper Charley Hughlett and rookie wide receiver Kenny Shaw also were waived.
Harris, a sixth-round selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, played in 31 games with seven starts in two NFL seasons.
"This is always a tough day when you have to make these decisions," Jaguars General Manager David Caldwell said. "We appreciate all the work these men did into the building of our team. They came to practice every day and competed. We wish them nothing but the best in the future."
With Harris' release, 62 of the 79 players on the Jaguars' roster have been acquired since the arrival of Bradley and Caldwell. Only wide receiver Cecil Shorts III and safety Chris Prosinski remain from the Jaguars' 2011 draft class, while defensive end Andre Branch and punter Bryan Anger remain from the 2012 draft class with wide receiver Justin Blackmon indefinitely suspended. Defensive end Tyson Alualu is the only player remaining from the team's 2010 draft class.
Tight end Marcedes Lewis (2006) and kicker Josh Scobee (2004) remain from previous draft classes, while the other 11 pre-Caldwell/Bradley players were acquired via collegiate or veteran free agency or other team's practice squads.
