First off the field: Day 15

8-17-21-Meyer

JACKSONVILLE – There were shoulder pads and pinpoint passes.

There also was again a ton of heat – one day after a comparatively cooler day. The Jaguars on Tuesday held a two-hour practice on Day 15 of 2021 Training Camp, working in full pads in 87-degree temperatures that felt like 95 at the Dream Finders Homes Practice Complex.

It was an impressive day for quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and equally impressive for veteran wide receiver Marvin Jones Jr. It was overall a spirited day, with the secondary defending multiple passes as the Jaguars moved on from a Preseason Week 1 loss to Cleveland this past Saturday – and began looking ahead to a road game at New Orleans Monday in Preseason Week 2.

The practice began minutes after the team announced five roster moves to trim the roster to the league-mandated 85: cornerback DJ Daniel (waived), wide receivers Josh Imatorbhebhe (waived/injured) and Tim Jones (waived/injured), defensive tackle Daniel Ross (reserve/injured) and tight end Tim Tebow (waived).

The Jaguars on Tuesday continued working heavy on situations, working extensive 11-on-11 red-zone and 11-on-11 work – along with a seven-on-seven/pass-rushing period. They also worked on punt as well as offensive and defensive installation.

Lawrence and Jones stood out with several connections late in practice, including a touchdown reception in the back of the end zone.

Head Coach Urban Meyer spoke to the media after practice Tuesday, along with running back Carlos Hyde and cornerback Tyson Campbell. Coverage of all three availabilities can be seen Tuesday on Jaguars Media channels and jaguars.com.

Here's a look at Tuesday's practice:

PLAY OF THE DAY

While the connection of Lawrence and Jones stood out throughout practice, it was veteran wide receiver Phillip Dorsett II – who has flashed in practice before and after missing several days – made the reception that stood out as the play of the day. Dorsett on the reception got behind the defense and made an over-the-shoulder one-handed reception for a touchdown from Lawrence.

STANDING OUT

*Lawrence's connection Tuesday with Jones was notable, particularly late in practice, with Lawrence finding Jones in the back of the end zone for a tip-toe touchdown pass that highlighted the team's red-zone work for the day. *Veteran tight end Chris Manhertz had a nice snatch reception on a high pass from Lawrence in the corner of the end zone early in practice. …

*Lawrence had a quick pass to second-year veteran Laviska Shenault Jr. that again showed the accuracy and velocity that made him the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. Lawrence also had a 25-yard pass in the middle of the field to Dorsett early in practice. …

*Veteran cornerback Shaquill Griffin continued as perhaps the standout secondary player of Jaguars 2021 Training camp, defensing multiple passes – including an inside route by Dorsett on a pass from Lawrence later in practice. …

*Defensive end Dawuane Smoot and rookie defensive tackle Jay Tufele both had strong repetitions in one-on-one pass rush, as did second-year linebacker/defensive end K'Lavon Chaisson. …

*Linebacker Myles Jack had an effective blitz on Lawrence early in practice that led to a pass defensed by rookie cornerback Tyson Campbell. …

*Second-year cornerback Chris Claybrooks had a pass defensed late in practice, and second-year cornerback Luq Barcoo had a pass defensed earlier in practice.
