JACKSONVILLE â Let's get to it âŠ
John from Jax
Hi, KOAGF. I don't know how to feel about the Jags' win against the Bengals. An ugly win is indeed a win. Too many asterisks to know which team was better (Jags penalties erasing touchdowns and an interception and the Bengals losing wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase early on). They are doing what they have to do in this very tough stretch of games. Who do you think played better, Lawrence or Burrow?
The Jaguars on Sunday beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 22-17, at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio â a game somewhat defined by double-digit penalties on both teams, but mostly defined by a gutty effort from the Jaguars on the road against a quality team. In that vein, I am not sure how there would be confusion over how to feel about Sunday's game if you're a Jaguars fan. They beat a good team on the road in a game made weird by a slew of penalties on both teams. They allowed just 23 yards rushing. They ran well. They won for a third time in four games and are in first place in the AFC South through four games. The Jaguars on Sunday were the better team by virtue of the final score. I thought Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence played better Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow because he didn't throw two interceptions that turned the game and because the Jaguars won.

You think if we could get defensive end Josh Hines-Allen on a weekly contract situation he might show up in the fourth quarter once in a while?
I don't know that Hines-Allen has played great yet this season and I don't know that he played great for the entire game Sunday. I know his pressure forced an errant pass that led to cornerback Jourdan Lewis' interception that led to a Lawrence-to-Brian-Thomas Jr. touchdown late pass in the first half Sunday and I know that those sorts of defensive moments are really important in the modern NFL. And I don't know that the Jaguars win Sunday without that particular play.

John. That was a heavyweight slug fest. Most importantly, the Jags won!!!
Yep.
Tommy from Jacksonville
This is a game we used to find a way to lose. Just saying.
Sunday was the kind of game good teams win. The Jaguars did not win these sorts of games for a long time because they were a bad team for a long time. They are a good team now, which is why they win games such as Sunday's. Or something like that.

John, this one was a bit sloppy on both sides of the field with all the penalties. Sometimes, you need to win the sloppy ones.
Yup.
Tony from Johns Creek, GA
O, sloppy, but the Jags found ways to win. That's all that matters.
Yep.

Oh Mighty 'O' / King Of All Funk, oh my. Gritty, not pretty. Oh my heart.
The Jaguars entered Sunday having won eight of their last 11 games by 14 or more points. That's an unusual number of two-score games not decided in the final minutes. This is the NFL, not the Southeastern Conference. If you're going to contend for the playoffs, you're going to have grind your way to more than a few victories such as Sunday.

BIG D! at the end... Scrappy Team!
Sometimes you just have to get the other team off the field.

The score was 16-10 in the fourth quarter and we punt from the CIN 41 to the end zone. Why not have Jaguars kicker Cam Little attempt a field goal?
Because the Jaguars were trying to pin the Bengals inside the 5-yard line and almost did and because a 59-yard field goal toward that end of the field was going to be a really low-percentage kick. What you're trying to do doesn't always work. It doesn't mean it was wrong to try.
JT from Palm Coast, FL
John, that entire sequence during the drive in the beginning of the fourth quarter was horrible. Cam can easily make a 59-yard field goal. Come on, Coach.
There's no such thing as an easy 59-yard field goal, even for Little.

The CBS broadcasters, they're bad Zone. It's just bad. It does not feel like a lack of respect, but rather a surplus of disrespect. It really is us versus all ya'll.
It's always broadcasting in the NFL.

What a moment for Rayuan Lane! Despite allowing some big plays, he makes the biggest stop at the most opportune time. This team's grittiness is something to admire, isn't it? Go Jags.
Jaguars second-year safety Rayuan Lane III indeed deserves some credit Sunday. Normally a special teams ace and reserve safety, he played much of the third and fourth quarters after safeties Eric Murray and Caleb Ransaw left with injuries. Burrow smartly seemed to target Lane and Lane allowed some big plays. That he made the game-saving tackle was a cool moment for a player fighting through a tricky situation. One fer Lane.

With the NFL's obvious push for more offense and scoring, does the league office take a close look at games officiated like Jags-Bengals? I understand some of the penalties were real and deserved but 24 combined across the two teams for over 200 yards seems a bit excessive. Is this something that's looked at by the NFL outside of the usual review of game officials?
The NFL office reviews officiating in all games and all officials are judged each week. That will include Sunday's Jaguars-Bengals game. Will they review it more closely than other games? I doubt it. This isn't something the league discusses publicly, so it will remain one of life's mysteries.
Jeff from Atlantic Beach, FL
You know the officiating is questionable when even flags on the Bengals make me go "ugh."
Fair.
Chris from Jax beach
One for Oluokon? The Falcons let him go and signed a big contract with us. Since then, he has been a stalwart for the defense and always a great leader. Great to have him on our team!!
Good eye. Jaguars linebacker Foye Oluokun's interception off Burrow at the Jaguars' 10 was a huge play in the fourth quarter Sunday. The Jaguars led 16-10 and I'm not sure the Jaguars would have won had the Bengals scored there. It was a veteran play by a smart, aware player and precisely why Oluokun is so valuable to this team.
Ray from Jax
John: The Patriots go to Buffalo and win. Please give some thought to the fact that the NFL is a week-to-week league. I would have thought you would have pointed this out before now.
I googled this and could find no evidence to support this theory.

The Cincy offense is incredible with lots of weapons just like us. But if you can't run the ball, you will have a terrible time winning. So glad the Jags defense can shut down the run so well. I don't think there was a run attempt by Cincy for two quarters.
When you can really stop the run, you always have a chance to play really good defense and the Jaguars can really stop the run.

Bad chili? Gutty W, O! But it sure looked like a massive case of indigestion to start! Knew the secondary injuries were going to be an issue, but the lack of composure was disconcerting. Nonetheless, beat a good team but had too many penalties but great defense often wins games!
Different people see games through different lenses. I saw a Jaguars team Sunday play with significant composure and play impressively through some significant adversity. There was some indigestion going on the press box, where a bunch of folks just couldn't resist the halftime dogs. There was talk of street oysters, but as far as I know, this was just talk.

Jags win, Texans lose. Winning is fun indeed. And something of note, the signs of elite teams are normally being able to overcome mistakes and still win. Learning in victory is so much better. A lot to clean up for sure, but 3-1 is a fantastic start! These games age you as a fan. Go Damn Jags!
The Jaguars' 3-1 is absolutely a quality start. You try to finish each "quarter" of the season above .500. That gets you to 12 or so victories and 12 or so victories usually gets you in the postseason with a home game. That the Houston Texans are 0-4 through four games is also positive for the Jaguars. The AFC South is taking shape and the Jaguars lead it by a game over the 2-2 Indianapolis Colts with the Texans and Tennessee Titans at 0-4. A good first month.
