O-Zone: Once More With Feeling

JACKSONVILLE – Let's get to it

Bruce from St. Simons Island, GA

O, with the loss of Hamilton, I believe the need for defensive line help increases. I believe defensive end Travon Walker could move inside to open a spot for a pass rusher at defensive end. It seems from your recent responses that the Jags are actively trying to make a trade before the trade deadline. Do you think this will happen?

Jaguars defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton sustained what appeared to be a serious knee injury in the second quarter of a 42-7 victory over the Indianapolis Colts at EverBank Stadium Sunday. This is a critical injury because few players outside quarterback Trevor Lawrence are as important to this team. Hamilton is key to the Jaguars' run defense, which is key to the defense overall and critical to the franchise's success over the last season and a half. I don't know that moving Walker inside "fixes" the "situation" inside and I don't know that the Jaguars will – or should – move Walker to the interior anything close to full time or permanently. I absolutely believe the Jaguars will continue to be aggressive trying to trade for a disruptive interior defensive player. This is as true now as it was before Hamilton's injury. Being aggressive does not necessarily making a trade. This is also as true now as it was before Hamilton's injury.

Why are the Jags so dominant when they play in Duval?

The Jaguars are 18-6 in the regular season since the start of the 2025 regular season. They have beaten a lot of good teams home and away. They are a really good team. They are dominant at home because really good teams are often better – and more dominant – at home than they are on the road.

Jesse from CA

Not D Ham!!! One for him and for a quick recovery.

Here's hoping.

Tony from Johns Creek, GA

O, nice win, but my concern is Hamilton. If he goes on injured reserve, the Jags may be forced to find a defensive tackle before the trade deadline. I hate it for him. He has had a great season.

Yep.

Nick from Annapolis, MD

Imagine you are the defensive coordinator for an NFL team. It's Week 2. You play the Jacksonville Jaguars next week. The only tape you have to prepare for the game is this game against the colts. Oof.

The Jaguars looked very good offensively for much of the game Sunday. Quarterback Trevor Lawrence was confident and efficient. They just as significantly ran as well as they have all season on Sunday, which bodes very well for the immediate future. They appear to be gaining consistency, explosiveness and physicality in this area. They worked this past offseason to be a more physical, more efficient run offense and they are accomplishing that. I wouldn't necessarily say they were so devastatingly great offensively on Sunday that no defensive coordinator could possibly devise a game plan to stop them. This is a week-to-week league. The Jaguars were very good this week. Onward ho.

An opening-drive, 98-yard scoring sequence?! It's beautiful, Clark!

Scoring is cool. Fans like it.

Rob from Jacksonville

What a game. Why don't I feel great about it? Injuries, offensive line, injuries. Absolutely dismantle the Colts and yet I feel like long term, this was net negative.

Winning never is a "net negative." It's too hard to do and too important when you do it. But the injury to Hamilton absolutely framed this game differently than otherwise would have been the case. Players such as safety Eric Murray, guard Ezra Cleveland and Walker also left with injuries. Difficult day on that front. Really difficult.

Nick from Virginia Beach, VA

Wanna give another shout out to D-Ham. Feel awful about his injury. How do we replace the big man?

Stay tuned.

Steve from Hilton Head, SC

John, we know this isn't the Southeastern Conference, but could the Colts beat the Hoosiers?

The Colts would not only beat the University of Indiana, they would beat any college football team in the country. A more appropriate question would be, "What would the score be?" The answer would be whatever the Colts wanted.

Richard from Jacksonville

What's a comment section?

I haven't the foggiest.

If you did not work as a senior writer for an NFL team, would you still watch NFL games? I have stopped watching basketball completely. Baseball is only the playoffs. This may be my last NFL season for health reasons, so I am observing. If it isn't, I feel like I have a decision to make next season. The removal of hitting and the over-officiating are, for me, making the NFL difficult to watch. What say you? If you retired tomorrow, would you still watch?

I would watch. I can't say I vehemently disagree about the overall quality of what we're watching compared to what we used to watch, but I would watch.

#FreeQuinnEwers! Let's Go Jaguars!! DUUUVALL!!!

Winning is cool. Fans like it.

This is exactly what the organization envisioned for the running game. Two tough running backs, hitting holes with consistent yards after contact. Sad to see good players go, but they absolutely made the right call letting Travis Etienne Jr leave. Tuten is just better.

It's funny how those people who helped turn the organization around and lead it to a 13-4 record – and an AFC South title – made some sound, productive decisions this past offseason. Who would have thought?

Haney from Little Elm, TX

Boring!! Bring on the Ravens.

Winning is not boring. Ever.

Bradford from Orange Park, FL

Um
that's cute and all. Having Travis Hunter back to return a punt. Obviously, I would jump through the roof watching him break one. But I think there's also something to be said about "not cutting your nose off to spite your face" with a maneuver like that. We already harbor an "interior defensive line quarterback disruption malignancy"
in which has a direct result of our secondary being hung out to dry basically all of every game we play. How's all that going go over if Hunter gets hurt after us deciding that him playing in just TWO phases of the game wasn't a big enough injury risk for Liam to pause before thinking it was a good idea to do something like that?

Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter returned punts at times Sunday. It doesn't strike me as quite the level of hot-button issue as this email suggests. I suppose I could be convinced otherwise.

Jarret from Crosby, ND

Zone, Sunday's game bears eloquent testimony to the truth that the Jaguars are wasting Trevor's prime with all these London games. I beg Owner Shad Khan to realize London is a competitive disadvantage and cease this madness. I realize there were extenuating circumstances this year and next will be a horse of a different color as well. But once the Stadium of the Future is complete the London commitment must end. The Jaguars are one of the best teams in the league at home; I implore Executive Vice President of Football Operations Tony to get Shad to see the light.

OK.

That game was fun to watch, glad to see some young players making plays, we will need that in December. More important is we (fans) had a lot of handwringing and worry about the offseason loss of two quality starters in free agency. Now it looks like an upgrade. Any word on the DHam injury?

The offseason departures of running back Travis Etienne Jr. and linebacker Devin Lloyd caused infinitely more concern outside the Jaguars' organization than inside. All appearances are that Hamilton's injury is serious.

Enough with the lack of sacks talk. The Jags have the highest-pressure rate in the league and any successful defensive coordinator will tell you consistent pressure beats sack stats all day every day. People are just fantasy football programmed.

Yep.

Steve from St. Johns, FLA

Trevor had a nice, efficient day and took advantage of a team who appeared to have lost their heart. Was I seeing things or did our quarterback check into a different play before running back Bhayshul Tuten took it to the house on a well-blocked hard-nosed run? He seems to be seeing everything these days and putting guys in positions to succeed. Also good to see wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. get a touchdown.

Lawrence commonly checks in and out of plays at the line of scrimmage. He has done this routinely since Coen's arrival as head coach because killing plays – and changing into better ones – based on pre-snap defensive looks is key to Coen's offense. Lawrence indeed is playing at an efficient, high level and has been since midway through last season.

Gary from St. Augustine, FL

Even when the Jaguars beat the daylights out of the Colts in Jacksonville – again – you still suck.

Go Jaguars.
