First pass of practice with an interception. Glad to see Trevor getting those out of the system. Did we just get bullied on offense AND defense in the first practice against someone in another jersey? I wasn't there, thankfully. But it sure reads like we got bullied.

The Jaguars and New Orleans Saints had a joint practice Thursday morning at the Ochsner Sports Performance Center in Metairie, La., in advance of Saturday's 2026 preseason opener for both teams at the Ceasars Superdome in New Orleans. I was there Thursday. I was neither thankful nor resentful of this, I was just there. Lawrence threw an interception early and the first-team offense struggled early. The offense was then really, really good for a stretch – particularly in the red zone – and was a lot better overall in the second half of practice than the first. The defense overall rushed the passer well and played the run well, with the Saints registering a couple of explosive plays against the Jaguars' defense. The Jaguars ran better offensively as practice continued despite missing multiple offensive linemen, and wide receivers such as Jakobi Meyers, Parker Washington, Austin Trammell and Brian Thomas Jr. all made impressive catches. Defensive end Travon Walker looked good. So did cornerback Jabbar Muhammed. No one bullied anyone. It was a training camp practice.

Dr. O: Feeling good about the upcoming season and want to ask about Branson Combs. He has kind of come out of nowhere: UFA and size-wise seems lighter than most linebackers. What is the scoop around training camp on Combs and what are his strengths and what sets him apart from the other linebackers on the team this year?

Combs, who signed with the Jaguars as a collegiate free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft, is an important storyline in 2026 Jaguars Training Camp. This is because he's competing with Ventrell Miller at outside linebacker and listed as co-starter there alongside middle linebacker Foye Oluokun. While Combs may seem like an out-of-nowhere story to fans and observers, the team has liked him very much pretty much since he has been around the organization. The scoop is that he's playing well and is going be a significant part of the defense because he can really cover – well enough, in fact, that the thought is his presence will improve the defense in that area.

Does the offensive-line injury list give us insight to the defensive line's expectations?

I can't imagine how.

O, you have witnessed several Jags camps. How is the current one stacking up in both talent and depth compared to previous camps? Should we be worried about the injury-plagued offensive line?

I have witnessed 15 Jaguars Training Camps before this one. This is a talented, deep roster and the Jaguars look like a team that contend for the AFC South title. I will be surprised if that doesn't happen. Worry about the offensive line in the short-term, not in the long-term.

With all the talk about wide receiver Parker Washington, and his new contract, I believe there's a high probability that one of our wide receivers will be traded before the season starts. We have a lot of talent there, and I believe capturing some of it is valuable in trading rather than continuing with the Jaguars. Our two draft choices from what we hear are also doing very, very well. Enjoy your work very much.

I don't believe there is a high probability of the Jaguars trading a wide receiver before the season starts. This would surprise me very much. I expect Washington, Meyers, Thomas, Travis Hunter, rookie CJ Williams and rookie Josh Cameron to be on the roster when the season begins.

All the national pundits have already enshrined Frank Gore into the Hall of Fame next year. In my opinion the only thing that Frank Gore had over Freddie Taylor is three more seasons played. If Fred would have had the same number of carries, he would have come close to Frank Gore's 16,000 yards. The truest measure should be yards per carry and Frank Gore was not that close to Fred's 4.6 yards per carry at 4.28. Oh, and Tom Coughlin could have stuck the ball in his stomach more closer to the goal line.

These are all good points. I agree with the "national pundits" that running back Frank Gore likely will be enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame next year. This is because he is the NFL's third all-time leading rusher and that sort of status on all-time lists often sways Hall voters. I do not consider Gore to have been a better back than Taylor.

O, haven't heard anything about Nate Boerkircher or Tanner Koziol. Got any notable updates for us?

They're both having good camps. Boerkircher is everything the Jaguars believed he would be – physical, good hands, very capable of mattering immediately – and Koziol has a chance to be a good red-zone presence as a rookie with potential for more moving forward.

Outside of Trevor, how are the backup quarterbacks looking and who do you see as the No. 2 and finally the practice squad quarterbacks?

Fine. I expect Nick Mullens to be the backup quarterback with either Carter Bradley or Joey Aguilar on the practice squad depending on the coming weeks.

Does the fact that tackle Cole Van Lanen is not on the depth chart imply that he won't be ready for the start of the season?

Van Lanen is not on the depth chart because he is on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Not being on the depth chart in his case has nothing to do with his status for the regular season opener.

This will be a short statement, with a room full of decisiveness, but we have to get Washington renegotiated now. Look at where this kid has come from, look at how his physicality has changed and his production has changed. Dump the backend of the wide receiver room, give up a tight end, and sign this guy! I think I know about cap, but see Keenan McCardell plus returning capabilities. A big one for Parker!

I don't know when the Jaguars will reach an agreement with Washington. I will be surprised if he's not with the franchise for the long term. Contract agreements can be tricky, and Washington's has some particularly tricky elements. Those elements are that he increasingly looks like an elite, foundation-type receiver and the fact that he hasn't really been an elite, franchise-type receiver for an entire regular season yet. I don't know that the Jaguars will get "Washington renegotiated now." That's OK. Not everything in life happens "now."

So Johnnie-O (I did not realize you had your own line of apparel) if there was an NFL expansion team awarded in the NFL (San Diego Sharks?) and the first 10 expansion picks come from the current Jaguar roster who would you select at picks 1-10? We all know Trevor is number 1.

NFL expansion drafts historically allow teams to "protect" most – if not all – top players on the roster. If they were not allowed to do so, I suppose my selections would be: Lawrence, Walker, defensive end Josh Hines-Allen, tight end Brenton Strange, Washington, left tackle Anton Harrison, defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton, middle linebacker Foye Oluokun, Hunter and Meyers.

No. I studied management at Florida, and I mostly managed to navigate multiple choice tests successfully while ignoring the reality that I was going to have to get a job at some point relatively soon. I can't explain the "smart-aleck" stuff. I guess it's a gift.
