Anthony Perkins enters his second season as defensive backs coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2026.
In 2025, Perkins was part of a Jaguars defense that set franchise records with 31 takeaways, 22 interceptions and a league-leading 107 passes defensed. They became the first team in NFL history to produce 30-plus takeaways after having 10 or fewer the season prior (eight). Jacksonville allowed an average passer rating of only 78.5, the fifth-lowest mark in the league. With Perkins' help, S Antonio Johnson produced a career-high five interceptions - including one for a touchdown - to tie for second in the NFL. The Jaguars were one of four teams in the league with four different defensive backs (CB Montaric Brown, Johnson, CB Jarrian Jones, CB Jourdan Lewis) with multiple interceptions. The team finished eighth in the NFL in scoring defense (19.8 points per game), and their five games with 10 or fewer points allowed tied the Los Angeles Rams for the most in the league.
Perkins came to Jacksonville after serving one season as defensive quality control coach for the Green Bay Packers in 2024. The Packers finished 11-6 in the regular season with a defense that ranked fourth in the NFL in takeaways (31), fifth in total defense (314.5 yards per game), sixth in points allowed per game (19.9) and seventh in rushing yards allowed per game (99.4). In the past 10 seasons (since 2015), the 2024 Packers are one of only three teams to allow fewer than 20 points per game, fewer than 315.0 yards per game and fewer than 100.0 rushing yards per game while also posting 30-plus takeaways. Green Bay scored 117 points off turnovers, the second-highest total in the NFL. S Xavier McKinney finished second in the league in interceptions (eight), earning AP First-Team All-Pro honors and being named to the 2025 Pro Bowl Games.
Before heading to Green Bay, Perkins spent two seasons (2022-23) as cornerbacks coach at Oregon State. Perkins was part of a staff in 2023 that helped the Beavers to an 8-5 record and an appearance in the Sun Bowl. The Beavers checked in at fourth in the Pac-12 in total defense (350.1 yards per game) and passing defense (235.8 yards per game) and tied-third with 12 interceptions. Perkins' cornerback group contributed to the Beavers' 63 passes defensed on the season, which tied for 27th in the nation.
In Perkins' first season at Oregon State in 2022, he was part of a staff that helped the Beavers finish with a 10-3 record, the school's first 10-win campaign since 2006. The season was capped off with a 30-3 victory over Florida in the SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl. Oregon State led the Pac-12 and ranked in the top 25 in the nation in scoring defense (16th, 20.0 points per game) and total defense (24th, 332.8 yards per game) The Beavers led the Pac-12 and ranked tied-13th in the nation with 71 passes defensed led by CB Ryan Cooper Jr., who ranked second in the conference with 13 passes defensed. Oregon State allowed nearly 20 fewer yards through the air in 2022 (224.5 yards per game) than they did in 2021 (243.5 yards per game).
Perkins spent three seasons as cornerbacks coach at Colorado State (2019-21), where he helped guide the Rams to one of their biggest defensive turnarounds in school history in 2019. CSU ranked seventh in the nation in passing defense (181.6 yards per game) in 2019, an improvement of more than 50 yards per game from 2018 (68th, 232.0 yards per game). The No. 7 national ranking was the Rams' best in at least 30 years as they led the Mountain West Conference in the category for the first time since 2005. In 2020, Perkins tutored CB Marshaun Cameron on his way to earning First-Team All-MWC honors from Pro Football Focus.
Perkins' first full-time NFL position came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he served as the assistant to the head coach in 2017-18. He also spent time with the Buccaneers in the spring of 2016 as part of the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. He spent the 2015-16 seasons as cornerbacks coach at Ohio University and also spent time with the Tennessee Titans in 2015 as part of the Bill Walsh program. Perkins served as the secondary coach at Indiana State in 2013-14 and began his coaching career at Colorado, his alma mater, as a technical intern for the Buffaloes in 2012.
Perkins played safety at Colorado (2008-11), appearing in 38 games with 27 starts for the Buffaloes, recording 236 tackles (140 solo), three INTs, six passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries. As a senior in 2011, he was tied for second on the team with 80 tackles (49 solo) despite missing four games due to injury. Perkins signed with the Denver Broncos as an undrafted free agent in July 2012 and appeared in three contests that preseason.
Perkins was born in Leonardtown, Md. He and his wife, Janessa, have a daughter, Imani, and a son, Trae. His grandfather, Don Perkins, played running back for the Dallas Cowboys for eight seasons (1961-68), where he was selected to six Pro Bowls, earned All-Pro recognition four times and was inducted into the team's Ring of Honor.
