JACKSONVILLE – Another hire, another dose of experience.
When it comes to the Jaguars' new secondary coach, you can add in familiarity and some Tom Coughlin influence, too.
Perry Fewell, a 19-year NFL coaching veteran and former Super Bowl champion, has joined the Jaguars' coaching staff as the secondary coach. The team announced the hiring in a statement Saturday afternoon, the same day Pat Flaherty was announced as offensive line coach.
"Perry Fewell was a defensive coordinator for a Super Bowl winning team and is a tremendous addition to our coaching staff, as he is one of the premier secondary coaches in this league," said Jaguars Head Coach Doug Marrone. "We are excited for Perry to return to where he made his NFL coaching debut 19 years ago and cannot wait for him to get on the field with our guys and help mold our young secondary into a consistent, league-leading group. Having played in the secondary himself, and experiencing success at the highest level as a secondary coach, I believe our defensive backs will quickly buy into Perry's methodologies and teachings and help solidify the back end of our defense."
Fewell, like Flaherty, has strong ties to Coughlin, who was named the Jaguars' executive vice president of football operations Monday.
Fewell served as the Jaguars' defensive backs coach from 1998-2002. Those were five of Coughlin's final six seasons as the Giants' head coach.
Fewell also served as the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants from 2010-2014. Those were Coughlin's last five seasons as the Giants' head coach. The Giants won the Super Bowl following the 2011 season.
"Perry Fewell has coached defensive backs and been a coordinator in the NFL, and he brings the experience of having been in several defensive systems," Coughlin said of Fewell. "He was the defensive coordinator for a Giants Super Bowl-champion team and has worked with some of the league's best defensive players. He will be a great fit for our defense and for what we want to accomplish."
Fewell spent 2015-2016 as the Washington Redskins' defensive backs coach. The Redskins tied for 12th in the NFL this past season with 75 passes defensed.
The Giants had 160 takeaways during his five-season tenure, the second-most in the NFC and the third-most in the NFL.
Fewell served as the Buffalo Bills' defensive coordinator from 2006-2009, and served as interim head coach for the final seven games of 2009. He coached the Chicago Bears' defensive backs in 2005, a season in which the Bears led the NFC with 24 interceptions. Fewell was the secondary coach of the St. Louis Rams in 2003-2004.
The Jaguars on Friday named Joe DeCamillis special teams coordinator. He has served as a special teams coordinator the past 24 seasons and is a 26-year NFL coaching veteran.
The Jaguars named Todd Wash defensive coordinator Saturday morning. Wash, in his 12th NFL season, spent last season as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator when the team ranked sixth in the NFL in yards allowed.
